Routers???

I need to replace my Linksys WRT160N and am getting confused as to what is available these days. It needs to be wireless and have a couple ports for wired ( 802.11n ) connections. Megabit would be nice but it must be compatible with Win 7, 64 bit. Range needs to be better than the WRT160N as my puter does not always see the router. Moving equipment around is not an option. I don't do anything fancy with it and basically use default programming. Any suggestions as to what to consider? Tnx

Re: Routers???

you mention that range is a problem. Is that the reason you are looking to replace?

If so, instead of a single unit with a lot of power why not consider a second wireless switch connected via one of the hard wires you have and put them on different channels?

I have a Linksys WRT54G2 which works great in 2 story home and even on the dock nearby. Have a 2nd one never used, if your interested.

Re: Routers???

All routers are compatible with Windows 7, even old stuff. Compatibility with the operating system is never an issue.

As for range issues, quite a bit you can do but the biggest is make sure there are no metal or concrete structures between you and the router. Even a 2x4 wall made of those metal studs will degrade the signal. A wireless router in the basement will be less effective outside then one on the main level. Like mentioned, if the router has to be in the basement or far side of your house/building/etc, then hardwire in a repeater on the main level on the other side of your structure.

Also you don't NEED 802.11n for the wireless unless your laptop only has 802.11n. Most should be 802.11g compatible. Basically what I'm saying is go to your local big box store and buy a Linksys router with wireless. If you want to do some research, go and see what they have, note the model numbers and simply type them in to Google with the word "reviews" after it and read what others have to say about it.

There are different varieties of open firmware for the Linksys routers that allow you more flexibility in tweaking the setttngs. One of the settings is the transmit power.

Look up DD-WRT.Com and check it out.. Looks like your router is supported.

I use the same router in an office setting. Works great!!!

At my home, I use belkin... I have had GREAT success with either the WRT 54 or the Belkin 54g...

If you have Comcast service w/all 3 (phone, internet and TV) services, they will give you router free.

Re: Routers???

I had Range problems with mine, but , I corrected it with long range antennas which just screws on in place of the ones supplied with my router. Now I have no problems connecting from my house into my metal workshop which is 175 ffet from my house. I purchased my antennas from Circuit City ,but, many other places carry them. ood Luck
