what does regular gearcase oil look like when drained. I believe mine is very thick grey? Is this right?

hi! if its gray and creamy its diluted with water and you got to change seals as well as oil if not you ruin the lower unit....dont hesitate do it NOW if run in saltwater.. if oil is clean it looks like oil...he-he.. :D okay..light brown to dark brown.. keep em running!

Re: routine maint.

does this mean I need to change the lower unit seals? Does $25 sound like a good price? I know it comes in a kit, but it looks like it does not include a new seal for the large outer unit to the main body, just the smaller seals for the water pump etc. Does this sound right?

yep. sounds ok ..the seal you mean is propably a o-ring..if not in kit mesure it and get a new one from a hardwarestore..viton rubber is best but nitril works also...i woud guess aprox 2-3$. :)
