My rpm gauge stopped working. What's the typical first thing should I check? Also awhile back my speedometer stopped working also, it use to be attached to a small spigot at the back of the boat then it broke, I attached it to a hose that's coming out of my 175 HP mercury outboard and is still not working, what should be check first?

Is the tach doing anything at all? With the key off it should go to about 1k and then to 0 when you turn the key on. If it is doing this then check your charging circuit. Hose for the speedometer may have another break in it.

check fuse and ground . rpm come from motor and speedmeter from water passing over tube back of boat . two thing not one tube going to motor may be not going to speedom you may need to replace spigot on back of boat to get it to work

No, my tach isnt movin at all with the key on or off. I might have to check the fuse but dont know where the fuse should be located whether its at the motor or under the steering column. I guess I can take the hose off the speedometer and check if the gauge works dont know how much psi to test with.

You most likely have a bad tach. Even with a bad fuse the tach should go to 1000 RPM when the key is off. A brand new tach in the box will show 1000 until power is applied. They do this to protect the movement

I've never heard of this. Don't recall ever seeing it either.

I'd put an AC volt meter across ground and the hot wire that comes from the stator to the tach while idling. If you have voltage then the tach is bad. If no voltage then it probably a bad connection to either the ground or the stator.

Ray, that spigot picks up a vacumn while traveling thru the water NOT psi. Have a helper observe the speedometer while you suck on the hose. I'm NOT being cute here, the needle should move. You should be able to find a new spigot at any outdoor store that also sells marine parts. Around $15.
