RPM Struggles - too much spline grease or new seals or linkage or...?

I just changed the impeller and driveshaft seals on my 1979 Johnson 115 HP - in another thread I posted my travails of getting the drive shaft splines to release from the crankshaft spline hub when I was releasing my lower unit.

New seals are great and have solved the lower unit water problem. However I fear I have created another problem. In my haste to get back on the water and fear of my splines getting stuck again I liberally applies Honda Moly 60 to my drive shaft spline taking care not to get paste on top of the drive shaft - for fear of creating to much presure on the crankcase.

So put the boat in the water this morning and fired her up - hhmmm first thing I notice is she is taking longer to warm up than usual - takes several minutes to get an idle which doesn't require the warm up lever.

I started the motor with the boat still on the trailer but once she was was idling I figured time for a real test. Put her into reverse and I can't get enough power to back off the trailer - hhmmm, weird me thinks. So my wife gives the boat a gentle nudge and off I go.

I start off slowly and give the new seals and impeller a chance to work a bit. Just slowly cruising at about 1500 RPM - I have a 17 pitch prop on that tops out at 5500 RPM so pre-seal and impeller change. After a few minutes of puttering about I decided to open her up a bit more...

2000 RPM at WOT????? WTF???? Turn the boat around and bring her back. Load her up on the trailer and then start replaying the last 4 days in my mind of everything I did in chanign out the seals and impeller. Unfortunately I ran out of time for the last step of actually water testing the motor at home so this morning on the lake was the first test.

So, here I am in my hotel room 3 hours from home thinking what is causing the issue? I thought maybe the impeller or the new drive seals are causing too much friction but that seems absurd the more I think about it.

I suspect I've put too much spline grease on which got pushed up between the top of the drive shaft and spline hub which is putting too much pressure on the crankshaft causing the engine to overwork.

Another reason I think this is previously when I would start the boat, the motor would almost immediately over-rev when the warm up lever was fully up. Now the motor goes to only 4000 RPM and holds there with the lever up.

So I am going to go buy some tools and remover the lower unit and clean out the spline grease and redo it. I'll also check my throttle linkages although I did not change them when I removed them so not sure why they would be out of wack now - maybe the kids were playing with them, who knows?

So does anyone else have any ideas as to what is the likely cause? Am I on the right track with the spline grease or do you think that is unlikely? (Another reason I think the grease could have got pushed up is I had to drop the lower unit after reinstalling since I realized I had forgotten to put the exhaust housing back in - Doh!)

Could you have swapped the cables?

Is that possible? I must admit I thought about that when reinstalling them but they had not beend adjusted and they are staggered a little so I assumed this was not possible but I will double check!

I was just thinking some more on this. If the cables were reversed would this also explain the warmup lever issue?

I'm starting to feel like an idiot....

If you disconnect the cables & pull them out of the cable retainer then get someone to operate the controls while you watch what happens at the motor end you will soon enough see what hooks to what.
Then the throttle cable goes into the bottom retainer and the shift cable goes in the top retainer.

Grease shouldn't be on top of driveshaft, but not for the reason you think. Grease on top loads the pinion and driveshaft bearing excessively, doesn't do squat to powerhead.

No, you did something else.

Ok I am not an idiot. The control cables were correctly connected and they are correctly adjusted so that issue is ruled out.

When I put the boat in gear it takes some effort to turn the prop but its not impossible.

I did just note the starboard carb air shroud is cracked at one of the bolt holes. This is the plastic shroud so don't think that is causing the issue.

Where should I look next?

Could something as simple as bad gas cause this- the reason I ask is the gas station sold me marked fuel with 91 octane. I had never bought marked fuel for a boat before so the only other thing I can think of is the two strike oil was a couple years old and sitting in my shed. Can this contaminate f uel?

No, the stuff keeps for many years as long as it's tightly capped.

Okay that should rule out the oil part of the equation. I've got a spare tank with known good fuel I'm going to try running tomorrow to see if it solves my sluggishness issue

if all you did was change the impeller and seals, you have another problem. start with the basics, Compression and spark test. it really sounds like you are either dropping a cylinder (spark/compression) or you have dirty carb high speed jets.

Agree, the work you did should not cause the issues you currently have.

Isn't that your problem?
You shouldn't be able to turn the prop when in gear

Re: RPM Struggles - too much spline grease or new seals or linkage or...?

Okay just back home after not being able to resolve the problem at the lake. But not all was lost.

At the lake I ruled out cable installation and bad gas. Also the drive seal swap is good and I don't have any water in my lower unit anymore!! So I'll take that.

And I agree these repairs should not have affected my motor the way it seemingly did.

Tomorrow I will test compression and spark. If they are okay I'll clean and rebuild the carbs. When I had the engine upside down to remove the lower unit prior to leaving for the lake, something got screwed up - I do recall, it was a bit violent when the drive shaft finally released from the crankshaft hub so perhaps the carb needles got jarred.

Under load she is only turning 2400 RPM. No load and she will accelerate throughout the range - but even with no load she is a touch sluggish in responding to throttle input. This is especially noticeable when cold starting with the warmup lever fully up - whereas previously the engine would over-rev very quickly when cold starting, now it slowly climbs to 5500 RPM. Also the tach needle bounces at higher RPM idle (say anywhere from 4,000 RPM and up).

I'm thinking its dropping at least one cylinder (will it run with only two?). Maybe burnt rings?
