We used stainless screws, you can actually "bury" the screw head in the rope and it doesn't show at all. By putting in one screw then stretching the rope as tight as you can, driving the next screw, and stretching again, you only need a screw every metre or so, the tension on the rope does the rest.

Jasper I really don't know how much this has cost so far but I would guess its somewhere in the region of €1500 without the engine. I have had to get a lot of bits by mail order because of where I live.

That rope idea is great, I never thought of that! After many sleepless nights (well almost), and after perusing lots of different options, I've taken the plunge and bought taco marine's smallest rubber rubrail with a white insert.
http://www.boatersworld.com/webapp/...51&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=706253

I originally thought that a stainless one would be the best, but didn't go for that for 2 reasons....firstly, the shipping cost would be astronomical, and secondly it would be very hard to get it to bend the way i want.
Another idea was to just have no rub rail at all and bring the white paint up onto the deck about an inch the entire way around....but the problem with that is that my 2-part varnish on the deck would dissolve my toplac paint! Plus it would require a nifty bit of masking off.

The only problem now is that I'm gonna have to build another boat to use up the 50 feet of rubrail!
