Rubber carb gasket

1988 60 hp johnson motor. I am rebuilding the carbs and i see theres a round rubber-like gasket that goes over the brass tubing inside the carb. Is this an important gasket or can i do without it? Thanks

Hi Crownroyal<br /><br />It will run without it, but wot mixture will be way too rich, and your sped will drop, plugs will eventually foul. Get a couple of new ones and put in it.

Thanks G Dane,ive got some new ones ,i was just wondering what they do,doesnt seem like they hold anything in or out and it looks like the gas was making them fall apart but i,ll put em in. This has to be the best message board in the world,ask a question and get a quick answer. Gonna make a marine tech out of me yet

Another question on that gasket. Does it have a round metal washer that holds it into place(looks like theres 3 in the rebuild kit or does it just slide up the tubing and nothing holds it into place

That gasket is held in place only by pressure being exerted against it by the float chamber body. There is nothing to be added to it.<br /><br />The purpose of that gasket is to seal off the large brass tube which is the high speed venturi. It is essential that it be there.
