rubber seal around hood

I have two hoods here for my 20 Evinrude. One that was busted up in shipping of the motor and the used replacement. The busted one has brand new rubber seal and the replacement has a fair seal. What is the best way to change this seal. I know there are large staples that hold it on but once you remove the staples how to you get them back in and please do not respond with a staple gun LOL. If you have to replace them with a gun then OK but I do not have access to a gun that size.

Straighten out the legs of the staples and carefully cut/remove them. Do this on both hoods. Since the staple holes won't line up, don't bother trying to reuse the staples. Clean up area where the 'new' seal will sit and use contact cement on the hood and seal. Don't overdo to cement. A nice uniform coating does the trick. Hold the seal in place with spring type clothes pins until the cement drys. Be prepared to use a boat load of clothes pins.

Thank you for the information. I will give it a try as I am having the motor repainted and hood redecaled with brand new reproduction decals.

You typically coat each side of the objects to be bonded with contact cement and let it dry for 5 to 15 minutes. Then when you press the objects together it makes and instant bond on contact. I use contact cement fairly often but have never used it on a hood seal.

Sikaflex 291 black does a sound job.

Apply it from a gun on the hood face only, bed the rubber onto it and leave it for a few hours. If you want a perfect finish, mask off the area before applying the Sikaflex.

Will withstand salt water also.
