Hello,

What is the standard low(cracking) and high rudder oil system pressure. I have found a lot specifications about 3-5psi cracking (min) and from 2500- to 3500 psi maximum pressure. I will like to confirm it.

Re: Rudder minimum and maximum oil pressure

Most of the rudder system oil pressure pipes have stamped a maximum of 3000 psi. Helm pump (Capilano 1250V). The cylinder is a Teleflex Capilano BA 200-7TM/BA175-7 of 310cc and 13200 in / lbs (151Kg), so the check valve haves to be in the range of max. 3000psi or above.

What worries me most is the cracking pressure, ie, the minimum effort that should be applied to the wheel, to begin to circulate oil through the check valve, without making much effort. Perhaps it is silly and I shouldn’t worry about the cracking valve specification of the value, but I don’t know if this value is critical.

Are you just curious ? Or do you have the wheel push back at low docking speeds ?

Ayuh,... Are ya replacin' something that ain't workin', or are ya re-engineerin' it because of a problem..??

I'd think you'd want a pretty light weight crackin',...yer arms are the power, Right,..??

Not exactly sure what you are looking for, the helm is a simple hydraulic pump. Designed to be turned by hand with a steering wheel. They normally turn very easily. Max pressure for the pressure relief valve in the system is 1000 psi. The hoses or tubing couldn't hold 3000 psi.
Here is the specs, maybe that will help, if not, you should probably call Teleflex.

PS: Things like having the wrong type oil can make the helm a lot harder to turn.

Re: Rudder minimum and maximum oil pressure

Originally the boat came with two check valves in the two high pressure helm output. Why are those check valves there? I dont know. I found them very corroded and they doesnt work at all. They act like simple NPT connectors. During this years, i dont notice any changes in the rudder, between good valves and damaged, but since they was factory installed, i just want to change them.

Note: The original cylinder is a Teleflex Capilano BA175-7. The BA 200-7TM is the actual Teleflex substitute.

Re: Rudder minimum and maximum oil pressure

My understanding is that the system uses 3 hoses and check valves so that any air in the system is sent to the reservoir and separated from the oil.

Re: Rudder minimum and maximum oil pressure

To heal health, I buy two valves PARKER IN-LINE with the following values:

Crack Pressure: 1 PSI
Max. Pressure: 6000 PSI

It cost me half the price of a brand Saami 5/3000 PSI valve.

Thanks to all. Case Close
