First; motor is an Evinrude 9.5hp M-9922S E07043 which i think is a 69'.

OK so I'm at a loss on this motor right now. I installed a fuel pump kit and cleaned out the carb. The motor runs but very rough. I narrowed it down to the top cylinder not having any spark. The lower cylinder has a very bright, strong spark. I popped off the the flywheel and the coils, condensers, and points look brand new. I tested the coils for resistance and both tested out fine(both windings). I checked the plug wires for resistance and they were both fine. I then switched the coils, installed the flywheel and still same result. Bottom spark top none. I then switched the condensers and cleaned the contacts on the points and tried again. Again same result.

Not sure what it could be. :( The only thing i can think of is maybe for some reason there is an interference with the magnet when it passes over that side of the motor. The coil location in question would be the one right by the carb., the one farthest from the carb. seems to produce a great spark.

Have someone pull the rope in the dark and you can watch for spark going to ground some where. Best of luck. Rick.

If coils, points and cond check out OK, check the plug wire to see if it is shorted to ground by the hold down clamp.

yeah i tired that last night Rick, but maybe i need to get a second person to pull the cord that way i can peak way in there under the throttle cam.

Ill check the hold down clamp as well, but im pretty sure i too that off to follow the wires all the way back to the coils. Are there hold down clamp on the underside of the cam as well. I will take that whole plate off and look under neath it.
Thanks.

Instad of taking all the clamps off, remove the coil from the wire, use an ohm meter and check for a ground.

sp wire has pulled away from the spike inside the coil...or connection of sp wire to wire connector inside the sp boot connection is faulty...2 other possibilities

Re: Rude 9.5hp no spark

Thanks for the help guys. I changed the plug wires and now runs a hundred times better. I bought some solid core plug wire stock and made my own. The engine runs good now for a few seconds then I get one loud pop. Like it's trying to cut out or something. Could this be a fuel problem or is one of the plug wires not seated right? I pulled the plugs after running for a bit and one was slightly black and the other was glossy, like it had a thin coat of oil. Both leads have good spark and show no resistance to the coil. Could one of the coils be going bad?

What are the plugs suppsed to look like after a good run? Should they be just slightly blackened up, or lightly coated with gas & oil?

the "glossy" one sounds like it's not firing..time to get an air gap spark tester check for spark length ..7/16" or so....did you make sure the heels of the coils were exactly aligned with the bosses under them?...the gap between the magnets and the coil faces is critical to a good spark..when you swapped the coils in your earlier test it seems to indicate they were both good

Is this a new motor to you?
If yes, I'd do a quick compression test on the cylinders. If the coils etc were changed, maybe the pervious owner was having the same problem, then unloaded the motor upon discovery of poor compression. If the motor is not new to you, then recheck the coils for correct mounting locations, (flush with the machined boss's) improperly mounted coils can cause the symptom you mentioned about the pop n die, or a low speed miss.

Re: Rude 9.5hp no spark

Great ill check that out today after work. I'm new to working on outboards and was not aware of the coil placement issue. I would just bolt them back randomly. I didn't know it was so critical. That could be the one thing left i have not done. Yes the motor is new to me, i just got in a purchase of an old alumacraft 12' semi-v on a zieman tandem seado trailer with this motor, tank and engine stand for $400. Smokin deal for SoCal.

When the engine is not poping it sound smooth. Its just been one thing after another. No fuel first then a carb kit, then no spark. Im sure some of this was my fault by not placing components back correctly (like the coils), so live and learn. At least the engine idles now. I can see light at the end of the tunnel. And if this motor does not work out i do have a 15hp super fastwin waiting in the wings :D:D:D:D.

But let finish one thing first. The fastwin still needs a hose connection and a tank rebuild. I got it without the tank but was able to find one at a swapmeet for cheap but all the gaskets are shot and the pump is ciessed, for now anyways. So i still need the connection to the motor, i located some duel line hose so thats done.
Ok getting ahead of my self now.

Ill get the coils lined up and fire it up again see what happens. Thanks for all the help.
