Rude lower unit oil change 93 40 hp

Is it true that the oil should pumped from the bottom to the top. If so why? Any particular or special type of lower unit oil needed for my motor. Mod # TE40ELETB<br />Thanks in advance.

Yes, there is a reason. <br /><br />Filling from the bottom-up ensures you don't get air pockets trapped in the housing, preventing it from filling completely. Many an otherwise OK gearhousing have been ruined for this very reason.<br /><br />As for the gear oil, use Johnson/Evinrude either "hi-vis" or "Ultra HPF" from your Johnson/Evinrude dealer. Sure there are others, but why not use what it came with.
