Re: Rude Wake/Ski boaters

I'll have to agree with the camera idea, that sounds like the best approach to this problem. The Fish & Game commission officer that patrols one of the lakes I go to is right on top of anything that's not right. Granted it's a small lake, but it's like 10 lb's of potato's in a 5 lb bag some days up there & he has his hands full most of the time. But if I were to bring him pictures or a video clip of someone doing this kind of stuff he would head right out & find them. The big lake in my area has 2 Fish & Game commission boats with 2 guy's on each boat that are scanning the lake 100% of the time. I'm sure if you brought evidence to one of these officers they would act on it. I don't think shooting at wakeboarders is the best idea, nor casting a wad of sinkers & treble hooks at them would do much good. Anyway, is there another lake that is any better in your area? We get a lot of NY'ers & NJ people every weekend & they don't really care much about the rules or courtesy on the water, I just shake my head when I see them doing stupid things. Just mt .02

You should watch Whale Wars, they have prop fouling down to science, all you need is a couple RIBS that you can destroy and several idiot's to help.

I'm not saying I don't support their effort but the application of their effort is the reason why I watch the show, what a bunch of maroons!!

I may take the opposite view and say its rude for you to be anchored anywhere but in a cove. Why not anchor in a cove where you know you won't be bothered?

I think u guys better watch your asses messing with some young wakeboarders like myself if you throw something at me because u are old and grumpy your going to get your *** kicked and the other people on the boat will do the same. we are not trying to be asses we are trying to ride on the glass of the water which means moving the boat all around the lake so we are not hitting are own wakes except for double ups.

...I now carry a pistol aboard...

Damn Canadian gun laws. That would be a helluva lot more effective than having to casually display a flare gun to a couple of buzzing jetskiers...:D. Although come to think of it it did work.

Kidding aside - As satisfying as it is to concoct these various retalitory plans, probably the video camera is the best.

Confrontational one-upmanship can get out of hand in a big way and the guy who thinks he's got the advantage can sometimes get a nasty surprise. A kid in my son's taekwondo club was murdered at a party standing up to a couple of unwanted jerk crashers. He assumed - tragically and wrongly - that his xth degree blackbelt was going to be the deciding factor. It was until they returned with a knife and ambushed him. Now all we've got is a photo memorial at the club and a couple of completely devasted parents.

Back to the boating - I too have been in some teeth-grindingly frustrating situations and bad as it feels to turn away - there are those few nuts out there (and remember, we're talking for the most part about prime idiot-aged particiants who act before they think) who will do who knows what when pushed.

Hmmmmmm, that might be kinda hard to do with a face full of bear spray... and there's enough for everybody in the boat!

I am a watersports boater, never been a rod and reel on my boat since I have owned it. That said, I try to be courtious to the fishermen on our lake, keep my distance when I can. I guess my point about the deal is: If you don't want to deal with my wake, fish in the no wake area (more than 1/2 of my local lake is no wake). If the best fishing is better in the watersports area, then deal with the rough water and enjoy the show!

I rarely go to the local sandbar where all sorts of things go wrong. But when I do I raise my "diver down" flag". I tie a line to a cleat and the other end to a life vest floating behind my boat. We occasionally take a dip. Other boaters must stay 300' away from me, and my flag....if possible.

Not had a problem yet.....but I notice others do without the flag. Hull #'s and a VHF solves all my problems if they arise.

Mother Nature has given me more problems than any other boat ever has.

Re: Rude Wake/Ski boaters

So you making a huge wake is solving the problem how? You could be damaging the shoreline, or others as well. I've actually called people over, and talked to them about it. Beats throwing, casting, or shooting at them!

Well, Skargo, with a big wake, they leave pretty fast. Can't ski/wake board with 3-4 waves coming at ya! The location is next to a old damn that is no longer a real damn just a strip of land in the middle of the lake so the hurting the shore line is not an issue.

I am starting to think the prop fouling is the answer.

What Lake were you at?

If it was at Lake Lewisville this doesn't surprise me at all. I find the rudest boaters in Dallas are all at this Lake. I stopped boating their after I was cruising the lake at 30mph and I happened to look behind me and saw a wakeboard boat 30 feet from my stern cruising in my wake. If I decided to slow down or stop suddenly he would've come up on top of me! I've been going to Ray Roberts now, much nicer and a lot more courteous boaters....

bigblank69,

Yes as a matter of fact it was on Lake Lewisville. I live 5 minutes from the marina and don't have a boat that I can trailer.
I cops are out on the weekend but, get this, only the Sheriff Department has VHF radios and they don't seem to have much range.

Dude,

How do I say this...."Better pack your lunch!".

You sound like just the ones that are causing the problems. You might kick my a** but we are both going to the hospital and you can take that to the bank!!

Re: Rude Wake/Ski boaters

Well, it would seem that I am not the only one with feelings toward the Ski/wake boarders.
Like I said, this lake is 29,000 acres and were I anchor is a popular anchor spot, it is not just me. If it were, I would move on.

Some of the ideas make sense and some are...well, out there. The floats around the boat (50') and if they cut inside, they get fouled sounds good.
I have really not, don't know why, thought about using my iphone and record some of the crap and then turn them into the TWC but consider it a done deal.

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas and letting me know that I am not the only one with the problem.

BTW, now that the wind has died down, we have moved our flotilla to another location and don't have the problem, for now.

Boat save everyone!!!!

There must be a whole lot of testosterone down there in Texas. Here at the NC coast, people tend to cooperate with one another. I've run into an occasional jerk at the ramp but I don't ever offer any advice: "Hey, your transom straps are still on!... Hey, your engine is still running!... Hey, you forgot to raise your outdrive!... Hey, the latch on your hitch is pointing straight up!". After all, someone like that isn't interested in my observations.

I just sit back and watch. Karma can be unfortunate. But most folks around here are nice.

Geez, I was thinking the same thing. When you take the picture and get hull #?s, take it to the proper authorities and let them handle it. Don?t settle for anything less then a fine if you have a choice. Once the word gets out, and it will, watch the problem tend to go away or there will be more patroling

Onecrazyredhead. maybe you should spend more time in your wake and then you will know what they are dealing with. For kicking someones a--,you might get the surprise of your life.

I'd really like to know where all these "water authorities" are.

And which ones will enforce the law on hearsay and photos, when they can't id the driver or judge proximity or speed..

Heck, I'd like to meet one that will even listen to a complaint.

Seems we have 14,000 lakes here, and about 100 water patrol agents.

I haven't seen one on the water in 3 years.

Re: Rude Wake/Ski boaters

The rudest boaters I have run into on our lake is fishing boats which seem to think they own the lake day & night.

Had one recently that blinded me so bad with at least 4 high powered Sodium Lights (that made Barge lights look dim) at night I had to stop for ten minutes to regain my night vision. He was just lucky I'm older & more patient now.

Re: Rude Wake/Ski boaters

Wow this has become a urination contest. Let me first say I am avid wakeboarder AND a fisherman so do I have to hate myself? I try to always be courteous as to fellow boaters, for example I wakeboard in a section off the ICW and if I see somebody anchored, or putting a boat on or off a lift or whatever I try to avoid them. If I get what you perceive as "too close" and you threaten me with projectile you better be ready. Ask a LEO, I am fairly sure you can (and will) be charged with battery. That being said I sometime ride where a friend of mine lives and he keeps his large sportfish at his dock and one night we were riding and unknown too me he was in engine room doing some maintenance and we were killing him with wakes. He cussed "the dam* riders" for an hour then realized it was me when he came out of the boat to get something. He called me cell, I idled over and we had a good laugh. Why don't we all try to remind ourselves that we do this hobby because it is "fun" , and if you get blasted by idiot wakeboarders I am sorry, just chalk it up to idiots and move to different cove.

Re: Rude Wake/Ski boaters

I can't believe this thread is still alive..... Folks the fact is that there are more inconsiderate folks in wakeboard boats than there should be.... why? well wakeboarding appeals to the young... with youth comes inexperience.... Also wakeboard boats are generally EXPENSIVE... much more so than a 14' john with a 9.9 OB on it..... So you put a bunch a rich young folks in a boat with no parents and sure they will often push it a bit... then there is the very nature of the sport.... the make a wake on purpose and the bigger the better.....

This does not mean that every kid on a correct craft is a jerk... there are some real class acts too.... also there are jerks in EVERY walk of life.... Last night I was woken up at 3 am in the middle of 40 boats beached and at anchor with people sleeping by a large houseboat with twin bigblocks... no mufflers and WOT..... doing probably 30 mph weaving through the boats... A few minutes later I was nearly knocked out of the boat trying to keep my friend's boat from being slammed into mine by his wake

BTW the law requires mufflers and restricts the night time speed to 10 MPH Also No wake speed within 150' of moored vessels..... No wake speed (IIRC) is the slowest speed that will allow steerage, not to exceed 6 MPH

Last..... Folks CALM DOWN!!!!!! Yep we ALL get pissed... you can bet I uttered a few spicey words last night.... But, There are plenty of people in prison and plenty in the grave from where one thought they were gonna kick another's arse and caught a bullet....
