Ruff day out

Had the family out today and had a guy in a tinny hit my boat and gouged a chunk out of a log and then he drove off like it never happened but I was able to run him down and get a picture of the boat and reg numbers and him. Its not especial bad but it looks deep and not really sure what to do about it if any thing. Right now I dont think its leaking and thinking a bit of JB Weld to fill it in.

Does not look too bad, but I'm no expert. If not leaking I'd sand off the rough edges and move on. However I hope you'll pursue the "hit and run" as that's just wrong. Sorry for your bad day.

Sounds like you need to report the accident to the police and go from there. Hard to tell from the pics where the damage is located. Hit and run on the water is the same as on land, its illegal. Do you have insurance?

Yes I have full coverage. And it isn't bad but its deep and I am not sure how thick the alum end cap is and thats where its at. Right now I am just bummed out and I am considering filing a report just in case I need to file a claim. What made it even worse I was sitting still with the boat nosed up on a beach.

Just curious, was the guy in the tinny young or old? Either way that person needs to be held accountable.

Hopefully you'll get it worked out. Maybe just a new bead of aluminum heliarc'd in place?

Well cheer up man, accidents happen. No one was hurt, thats a good day either way. Accidents happen on the water all the time, it can be fixed. Hit and runs on the other hand do not happen evey day and you should atleast try and contact the person or contact the authorities. You don't want this guy thinking he can get away with this everytime he has an accident . Hell the guy was probably drunk! I woould hold the guy accountable for his actions and report it.

Report it now so they don't ask why you waited so long.

He was young and I am sure its dads boat, and yes a spot weld would fix it if its even worth doing that.

Yea I know and I am thinking about it and No I dont think the guy was drunk just inexperanced and the thing is evey one makes mistakes and I have made my share. I am just more bummed out than any thing.

I think Ill go over tomarrow and put it on the trailer and take a closer look. I keep it on a slip.

Bummer James. Seems like every time we put the barge in the water something minor happens. Spills, nicks, gouges, scratches. Second week out, we had a crewmate put a nice cig burn in our new carpet !!! Good luck !!!

I woudl confirm it doesn't leak and just snad down the jagged edges and let it go, in a few weeks it will look like the rest of the tube.

To weld on it the welder would have to clean off a bigger spot and even then welding on those older lake crusted tubes is a real challenge, sand it down and keep your eyes out fo kids in jon boats.

That is a really gutless thing to do, I can't stand hit and run people.

I am going to put it on the trailer today and inspect it a bit closer, but I don't think its leaking and will probley put a bit of JB Weld marine on it just in case and file a report.

And I agree 5150. I used to do a lot of welding and I understand, while a lot of don't understand metals absorb trace elements over time and will react very badly if welding is tried and around here we have a lot of sulfur and iron in the waters.

Rooster, I well understand that stuff happens to boats and excepted that a long time ago and is one of the reasons why I got a old boat.

I did not even know of JB Weld Marine... But then I just learned of Sta-bil Marine too. Now I'd like to know how the marine versions differ from the regular versions?
