This is kind of an unusual happening.....having the throttle plate screws fall out. They are usually peened on the end to hold them in place. If the bottom carb is ok, I would not try to remove the screws. You may find it difficult to remove them if they have been peened. You could end up stripping out the threads.

Ralphy, can you tell if they have been removed before or are the screw head slots look like factory?

When you reassemble the throttle plate, leave the screws loose and snap the throttle a couple times to make sure the plate is seated in the throttle bore. Then tighten the screws. Failure to do that will create the same situation as a partially open throttle scenario.

Thanks guys...OBJ, looked like the top carb screws had been removed, there were some scrapes on the head. I put some aviation grade sealant on them. They went it fine, no stripping on the threads. Did not remove the bottoms, just checked to make sure they were snug which they were.

Silvertip, thanx for the tip. I did that and the linkage moves nice and smooth.

remove the carbs and peen the screw ends over. there is a good chance lock tite alone wont hold them as the vibration on that shaft is incredible.
the shaft is technically non-servicable for just that reason. ya got lucky once with a loose screw, dont push it. its nasty when they go on past the reed and the reeds open up enough to allow it and the transfer ports are big enough to pass them but the piston crown to cly head clearence usually stops them just before the piston self destructs.
I have seen many on the 2 cyl jonnies esp the 40,48 and 50. they also tend to break throttle shafts at the screw area and injest screws. never seen it on a 3cyl always 2cylinders.
last lucky guy I saw like that dropped all three screws from the plate on a 225, two ended up in the airbox and the third jammed in the shutter.
but the unlucky ones end up with a resleeeve and a piston at a minimum.

OK Rodbolt you scared me just enough to start anew, but could you tell me how to "peen" them? They do not extend thru the shaft, so do I scruff up the threads prior to putting them in? Any help here is most appreciated.

What you can do is take a very sharp center punch and center the punch on the end of the screw and give it a sharp tap with a hammer. This will expand the end of the screw and lock it in place. Put a flat punch on the screw head to support the screw when you punch the other end. This will keep the throttle plate from bending.

if you have never attepted to "peen or "buck" over screw thereads you may want to take it to a shop.
will take all of 10 min.
if you do it, use someone to help hold things still. its also imperative to support the slotted side with a brass drift or similar object then use a center punch to distort the threaded side.
most those screws originally did stick out the back side by a thread or two.
but thats what a runaway looks like:). most two strokes if you rev them high enough with no load can actually diesel and wont require an ignition source.
years ago on the old big twin motors we eliminated all the tilt locks and start in gear protections wgen running in an ocean dory, I made the mistake, once, of eliminating the vacum kill switch. it got hooked back up after I cleaned myself up :).
I watched a friend of mine smoke a 3cyl suzuiki on a flusher that way once :)

you dont want to **** the throttle shaft,or you will be having more problems,it dont take much to cause the shaft not to move freely

Re: Runaway Revs!! J48ESLEDC..UPDATE>>HELP!!

I just posted this on another post, but thought I would share here too since it was basically the same issue.

Sure enough it was trying to eat a screw. It was one of the four screws that holds the carb plate to the carbs.

I did some surgery and extracted it with a long pair of needle nose. The throttle was open with the bolt there.
Once I removed it, it would close properly. I looked for any other parts in there, none that I could see. I cranked it up and it ran fine. Although it isn't real tight against the carbs, I am thinking that is how I am losing a little bit of fuel. If it isn't all the way flush against the carb plate, then fuel can escape there I suppose.

Now here is the big question:

How in the world does something like that get unscrewed?

I tried putting the screw back in , but guess what, there were no more threads left in the hole where the screw was at. (Guess that is why it came out huh?) I also looked at the other screws and they were fine except one, and it was rather loose. I tightened it up some, but it was kinda stripped , so I got it as tight as I could for now. Will have to do something with it too I suppose.

So what do I do now, have someone rethread the hole? Helicoil?
What can I do with this or should I have a mechanic redrill the hole or have a new plate put on?

As a general rule, OMC throttle and choke plate screws are staked after installation and are not supposed to be removed. Removing them tears the threads out of the shaft, as you have discovered. The correct way to repair them is to replace the shaft and screws. Trying to stake the replacements is sort of a pain. A drop of high strength Loctite will do.

So how are you suppose to take that piece off the motor then to work on your carbs if you have to?

Should never be any reason to remove them unless they are worn out. They normally will outlive the rest of the motor several times over.

I think airxsteel has jumped Ralphy's thread and confused the forum a bit.
