Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does it run up and stall?

Check that your butterflies open and close as they should.
Verify that you are getting constant fuel flow to the carbs.

Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

butterflies seem to open and close fine. but like i said when the throttle runs up nothing moves that i can see. no it does not run up and die i have to shut it off for fear of it blowin up. then when i restart its same story idles for a few seconds then builds to very high rpms

Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the engine off, move the throttle from idle to full and back again. Does the magneto plate smoothly rotate back and forth? It sounds like the plate is stuck in full advance.

Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not sure what the magneto plate is but everthing seems to move and return as it should. right under the fly wheel where i think the sprk is regulated, excuse me for not knowing the names of all the parts im really new at this, the spark control does not go against anything when you advance the thottle it appears that it should go into a "notch" and turn a round deal under the fly wheel? is this the magneto plate? if it is it may well be stuck in full advance because it doesnt rutun or move. sombody have a pic of this so i dont tear into somethin i do not need to?

that all looks to be intact and when i looked again i think it is working as it should when i open and close the throttle. could this be related to something i did when i put the carb kit in? like i said im really green at this

Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sounds like a carb adjustment problem, remember! if you tinker with something and when you put it back together it doesnt work properly chances are the problem is with what you touched rather than what you didnt touch. sounds to me like you have something out of adjustment like maybe the idle mixture or the throttle posistion screw. i would disconnect the throttle cable just to eliminate a binding cable, and then begin trouble shooting.

i'm wondering if float setting is too high and fuel overflow is being drawn into the engine, since you just had the carb apart it would be suspect.

Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it sucking in air from somewhere? Gasket folded, maybe? In order to run away it requires a good deal of air, not just fuel, and if the butterfly is not open when this happens it is getting it from somewhere else. There may even be a loose connection where the fuel line attaches, allowing air into the fuel line. Find where it is getting air and you will find your issue.

Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok before i deprat on my quest in seach of the problem when i put the floats back in i adjusted them so they were level with the bowl should i have "tipped" them down a little? reading about it i have seen both recomended and went with level. and im guessing that this possible air leak could be most aywhere on the carb that has a opening? thanks for all the help you guys. im guessin ill be back before this is over. lol

Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a rule of thumb, I always adjust the float so it closes the needle valve when the float is level. That does *not* mean level with the carb, though. It means parallel with the ground (or water) when the engine will be running. If your engine is exactly vertical when running, then level with the carb is where you want it.

Tipping them up will make the bowl overfill and possibly cause fuel runout; Tipping them down will cause your engine to starve at high RPMs. There is wiggle room, and it doesn't need to be exactly perfect, but as close as practical is best, as the engine will likely tilt backwards from the forward motion and pre-planing effect.

Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok that helps a bunch and makes sense. could this cause the issue im having when combined with the air leak or could it doit just by itself, my thought is it still needs to be getting air from someplace because the carbs never open when it runs off?

Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when you start it try covering the carb opening where the choke is with a rag or the palm of your hand, if it continues to runn off, you will know you missed something when you reassembled the carb. you havent mentioned any trouble shooting performed since your origonal post, you have had many people give some good suggetions, what have you tried and what are the results? we cant move on to the next step if you dont give any feedback on the troubleshooting ideas we give.

Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i leveled the motor in the barrel and started it i ran pretty fast for a little bit then settled into an idol. seems to be runnin a little rich but did not run off from that point on. i let it run about 10 minutes. so im going to pull carbs again and tip the floats down some. and try it all again but that appears to have been the problem. i will let you all know how it comes out. and again many thanks to all who helped!!!!!!!!

Re: Runaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

put a piece of hose on the carbs, after draining them. now blow into the hose, right side up you should be able to blow air into them. upside down, nothing should pass. that is how i test them.
