Put a brick on the gas pedal of your car. Start the engine, leave the tranny in neutral. That's what runaway sounds like. Pieces going through the side of the engine is another sign that the engine perhaps ran away. Pulling the throttle on your outboard back to idle and having the engine continue to spin itself nuts is another indication.
