Any Merc machanic's here! I'm tired of replacing my T-stats in my 2004 150 Saltwater 2 stroke motor, can I run the motor without them? I live in SW Fl and warm up isn't a problem. My pee water is always very hot to begin with and if I mossey along ( around 2000 rpm I guess ) for too long my warning buzzer goes off.

I doubt that your motor will reach proper temp (140 degrees) with out t-stats. you should be able to just clean your t-stats..how long since you replaced your impeller? maybe flush your motor good with t-stats out..then clean them and put them back and stay off the sand bars LOL...a motor that runs too cold will burn more fuel and have carbon build up..but I will admit that is better than over heating.

Bought a new 150 V6 in 85 and several years later one of my t-stats froze up. Talked to the mercury mechanic at the dealer and he told me to gut the stat and put the stat housing back in and run it. Did exactly that and haven't had a problem since. I live on the west coast of fl. I also change the impeller every 2-3 years and never had an overheating problem.

It may not be your t-stats causing your problem. Service the impeller if it has not been changed in last 2 years, service the poppet valve as it may be sticking, flush the engine with a product such as Salt Away and change to the S/S t-stats. Merc part # 833072 or aftermarket 403S. As posted to cold of a motor will have more problems at low RPM operation, the gutting or washer trick is mainly for engines that run nearly WOT all the time.

Let me put my 2 cents in...Look up "COLD SIEZE"...even though you are in warm water you want constant temps in your motor.. It also will help with idle quality.. Outboards are designed to run in warm water WITH therms so you have other issues..Salt tears up a motor if not treated right...Flush with Salt Away...change water pump yearly as your motor uses a small pump that wear out quickly. I have a 200EFI motor that lost a cylinder due to cold siezing...that is the piston expands quicker than the steel cylinder since the motor is cold and doesn't have any heat in it...Poppit valve only good over 2500 where you want it to dump the water as fast as possible taking the heat out of the motor...Replace it to make sure it is good..Easy and cheap to do..Back flush the motor by taking out the therms, and forcing water in the holes with the lower unit off so that water will come out the water pickup tube...just some ideas to try and cool your motor down...good luck
