I am purchasing a used boat with a 2001 15 HP Merc Bigfoot.

The dealer told me this model Merc could not be started out of the water unless put in a bucket, it does not take the earmuffs hooked to the garden hose.

is this correct or is there some other adapter other than the earmuffs that i can use?

also, any issues i should be concered about with this motor? it has under 100 hours and was serviced regularly.

Thanks
Jeff

Personally I would want them to START IT IN THE BUCKET! That's like buying a car on a trailer and having them tell you "Can't drive it on the trailer... only on the road"... WELL LET ME THEN!

It's a 15HP. Wouldn't take a huge bucket. A couple of cinder blocks and a 5/10 gallon bucket maybe?

I don't know if what they said is true or not, but given a choice, i'd much rather run it in a garbage can instead of on muffs anyway. When it's run in a can/tub/barrel you see what the water pump is actually pumping, not what the hose pressure is pushing through. Also it gives you proper exhaust back pressure so, the idle will be the same as on the water, and you can also idle it in gear to make sure idle in water, in gear is good.

Well, a garden hose isn't going to push water through the whole cooling system. Tjhe boat can suck up over twice the amount the garden hose is putting out.

We're talking a 15 hp outboard here, not a big block inboard.
