Running a/c without running genset?

I have a small cruise air a/c system and want to run it off of battiers what type of inverter system would i need and how long could i run it.<br />the a/a unit specs are<br />voltage: 115<br />full load amps: 8<br />starting amps: 18<br />freq: 60hz<br /><br />Thanks,jhp

Joe, check out this page - http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/commerce/command/ExecMacro/west_advisor.d2w/show_advisor?fn=471a.htm&store_num=9 <br />It covers all the high points better than I. 115 x 8 = 920 watts continuous to run the ac and 115 x 18 = 2070 watts peak to start it. I bet you'll eventually run something else along with the ac so I'd suggest you get at least a 2000 watt continuous rated inverter. A good rule of thumb for motor starting is to have twice the capacity of the motor available. How long you can run it will depend on your battery bank. Two heavy duty 6 volt batteries in series will last longer than a single 12 volt if you can spare the space and weight. :)

Not familar with 6volt bat. how much space do they req. and if i had two how long could i run the a/c and if had room enough for 4 how long could i go. <br /><br />Thanks,jhp
