running an engine outside of the boat

Once I've got my engine rebuilt I'd like to test it and adjust it before I put it back in. I've seen lots of people on Youtube do it. They usually mount it to a pallet and then hook up a hose, a fuel line, and the battery, etc. I can't seem to find a video or step by step instructions on how to do this. Seems straight forward but just thought I'd ask if anyone can direct me to a site or video or something on how this is done. It's a 302 188hp so it's gonna need to be strapped down tight. Saw Frisco Jarretts do it on his rebuild but couldn't quite catch all the things he did.

Re: running an engine outside of the boat

All I do is sit my engine on a trolley I built specially for it, connect fuel, a battery, a water hose (make sure I have the exhaust directed away from anything that I don't want to get wet). I also connect my laptop computer (I have an MPI engine) so I have a 'dashboard' to monitor vitals.. I connect a remote starter switch so I can crank the engine, and use a short length of wire which I stick in the right holes in the harness plug as the 'key'....

Turn the water on, hit the starter switch, and it runs.. :D :D

Thanks Chris. You mentioned the part I'm missing. Which wires go where in the harness plug?

save your self the trouble and just run a jumper from the + battery to the + side of the coil, remote starter button to the slave .

Re: running an engine outside of the boat

If you run a cable from the battery+ to the coil+, you bypass the resistance wire and could burn the points, or overheat the ignition coil... (as a quick test to make sure it's going to fire, sure, but to run until it reaches operating temp, not really)

Just link pins 5 and 6 on the big plug....

Cheers....

And if you don't know what the remote starter switch is, go to Napa and ask for it. Great little tool.
