running bad ? 78 85hp just bought rotor moving all over inside cap full of somet

i just bought this boat and the motor . decideed to tune it and pulled the cap off to see looks like metal shavings and grease mixture in cap so i grabed the rotor and to my surprize the shaft has a lot of play in the distributor does anyone know where or how much this is to fix ? to me i have no idea how to pull this apart and fix .cap is old rotor is old wires is old .just bought this yesterday work on today? lol. since im looking i see a belt thats turning the distributor under the flywheel it looks old too . how hard is this all going to be and how much should this run any ideas? i know about car motors but never worked on a outboard should i tackle this ? and can i get the parts?

Don't feel bad about buying it yesterday and working on it today. I got my merc on 24 Dec 2005 and I'm still working on it!<br /><br />No advice on your woes though... Someone more knowledgable should chime in soon...

ok thanks but this doesnt look right its like there a shaft bearing or something going wrong i dont know much about outboards but a distribor a little

There is indeed a bearing failure. Those distribuors are repairable. You need a manual, trust me! Never try to get the rotor off the shaft. It's part of it.

ok cool because i was but i figured it was froze so i stop to gather info on whats going on . thanks for the help again . wher should i look for a manual ? an can these parts be replaced cheaply ? knowledge is power thanks

also how hard is it to remove and replace the bearings in the distributor . i need a puller to get flywheel off any other special tools that i would need ? how hard is it to set timing back ? im a newbe to outboards . anyone know of a cheap place to get these parts ? cap rotor wires belt bearings looks like 300 or more

I've been able to pick up everything I need for my 1975 85hp and 1973 85 hp mercury on ebay. You just don't want to start replacing parts for a tune up as they can get pretty expensive (new cap is $100) but the bearing and timing belt you want to go with a new one. I think I saw the belt for about $37.00. But get a manual.

Ebay had a distributor for $200.00 cap and all. so try ebay. I bought one there last year and it is working fine. Also about 1 hour from you on <br />I 85 in hartwell G.A. there is a place called <br />cc marine that deals in old mercury inlines that may have what you need email me if you need the phone # @ mathis1011@bellsouth.net. good luck, Tim

Heya Cammy, I'm someone you might wanna know with regards to finding a complete used distributor for that critter. It also sounds like a bearing failure to me. you have plenty of options but if you get stuck, look me up. Also.. see my "timing and sync" post on this board for info on easily restoring the "link&sync".<br /><br />-Wayne
