Hey everyone,
I have a 1981 75 HP Evinrude 3 cylinder, after I put the boat on the trailer I unplug the fuel line and let the engine run in the water until it runs out of fuel before I pull the boat out of the lake. The reason I do this is so when I tilt the motor up and use the transom saver for pulling the boat fuel does not leak out of the carb?s.
I have been told by some that this is ok to do and others have said that it's a bad thing to do. Any pro's or con's on this?

I do the same if the motor is not going to be used for some extended period of time. I do it so the fuel will not dry up and deposits in the float bowl.

mulitple cylinder motors the top cylinder runs out of fuel before the lowers, so you are dragging the upper pistons, without lub. just let the carbs drain. using seafoam keeps the clean carbs clean, and varnish free.

its a pro for the reason you stated,1 con would be ,the carb bowl area dries out and the float needle could stick, the oil fuel mix when dries gets kinda gummy,if its a weekly think,I dont hink you will have a prob.if its a matter of letting the eng sit for months I suggest you use the omc engine store ,which prevents the problem of gumming in the carbs, but you need to injest the storing oil into the fuel line before thacarbs,if I recall you have a standard butterfly choke, the newer choke primer systems can have a valve adapted to it so as to allow diret supply of the store oil into the fuel line without much fuss, you might want to make an adapter(or may be avail for purchase now)that allows the engine store oil to shoot into a tire type air chuck, the oil can has a hose that screws onto these type fittings

What about running the motor out of gas out on the water? I have two tanks in my boat and usually if I'm out for the day, mid-day I'll run out of gas on one tank and have to switch. Is that bad for the motor? Weve been doing that for as long as I can remember (years and years).

I had a 1968 Johnson 85 and always ran it out of fuel after a trip and never had a problem.
