Re: Running engine with 1 head bolt missing.

If all else fails take it to a good tool and die / mold shop around 7:30p.m. on the afternoon shift. You will most likely get the job done at a fraction of the cost and a lot more care taken of the finished result. There are plenty of spark erosion machines still going strong.
I know this because I have done it from all aspects !!! Taken something there, arrived to find my employees doing it for someone and also working at the shop myself and doing it for someone.
Where theres a will !!!!!!

And quit using those bolt extractors. But every time I say that, it starts an arguement, so I won't say it. But see what happens?

I agree you will wind up drilling and taping anyway

First of all thanks for all the suggestions. I finally got the bolt extractor out and then tried left handed drill bits. I ended up just drilling the rest of the screw out with the left handed drill bit. That bolt was stuck in good. I need to know how and what size taping bit should I use? The threads are completely gone.

not sure what size it is but when you do your helicoil you will need a drill bit
the size you kit calls for then you will tap it the helicoil will bring it back to its original size ,make sure its stainlell helicoil ,i get the machine shop up the road to do my helicoils ,he charges 20 dollars he has alarge kit so its worth
it to him.

Re: Running engine with 1 head bolt missing.

You have a couple of choices. Get a heli-coil kit and drill bit and do the work yourself (kit & bit about $35) or just take it in to a shop and have it done for about $25. If you think it's a one-time affair just take it in.

Either way, just take a head bolt in and get a kit/job to match.

So I guess the heli-coil is the way to go? Nobody likes the drill and tap. Also where do I get new head bolts?

Wow, so the ole lefties work well then. That's good to know. Yes, now you'll need to drill and put the heli coil in to get the threads back.

So I guess the heli-coil is the way to go? No one thinks the drill and tap method is any good. Also where can I get the replacement head bolt?

the replacement head bolt you can get at most hardware stores. Get a hardened bolt. The size is going to be determined by the size hole on the head. After getting the head bolt as others have said you can take it to a machine shop and have a heli coil put in, but seems the machine shops in your area are not inclined to do it. I would just buy a kit that fits the size bolt you need. I just bought one for 40 dollars at NAPA. The kit will come with instructions, a tap, helicoils and the tool for putting them in. use the correct drill bit and drill out the hole. Use the tap to tap threads for the helicoil to fit into then screw in the helicoil. then hone the head and put your new gasket on it.

If your threads are already gone, there's nothing left to drill and tap. Helicoil is the only way to go besides weld to fill and redrill.

Re: Running engine with 1 head bolt missing.

just an FYI. Concrete drills are cheap and are carbide tipped. they will drill thru anything including broke off HSS drill bits and most extractors.. Actually starting with them will eliminate most problems. they flex abit unlike a true carbide bit which may shatter.. ussually once you hollow out the bolt you can peel out the broken bolt.. by denting in an edge if it is flush. Or just crushing it all in with Vice gripes if you have a stub sticking up. and working it back and forth.
