I just bought a 1987 bayliner capri with an 85 hp force motor on it. I have never had an outboard mainly inboards. I hooked up the ear muffs to the the intake and let engine run but the alarm came on and no water ever came out of the holes. what am i doing wrong? i dont know if there is a plug in somewhere from maybe being winterized or what or even if what i have the muffs hooked up to are the right thing. Can anyone help me?

Do you get any water out the exhaust at all.?. I would drop the lower unit (as a first port of call) and inspect the water pump as that is not a hard job.

did you put lower unit lube in it? also check impeller/ waterpump. do not run motor on muffs above much more than idle. but there should be no reason to be hire than idle.

Put your muffs on and take a pic and post it.
Usually you should get some water out even if the muffs aren't on right.
Since it's new to you.Service the lower unit(new impeller/oil) and do a compression/spark test.
Fill out the profile, you might be close to someone who can help.J

Ok, so this is your first outboard? First thing, you should have water coming out of a hole just below the engine cowling within a second or two after start up. If your alarm only sounds while on muffs and not underway then it's definitly your impeller. It's pretty simple to replace. If you need some direction Youtube offers several videos on replacing impellers. If you have any questions feel free to send me a an email.

I always wonder why advice is given by the unknowing.....you lack the knowledge to know that those vintage Force engines do NOT have the telltale/pee hole outlet that other outboards have, so it won't be there. Those motors can be modified to have one, but stock, it lacks that feature. Such are older Force motors. Bone simple, but

i have not put lower unit lube in it yet or checked it....maybe i should have done that first. and i only had it idling and i just ordered a new impeller for it just so i can change it when i take it all apart.

and i will get a picture first thing in the morning for you guys. and the water will come out of the exhaust???not those two little holes on the back?but i will deff take all of the advice i can get. i was kind of scared buying a force because my neighbors around me all have boats and said forces are junk but it was a good deal and the motor sounded good when i heard running.

People that call Forces junk probably never had one.Or had one and didn't take care of it and it broke down.
I started working on them in 1986.Bought a boat with twin/85's in 1988 and they were still running when I removed them to repower witha single Merc.last year. That was a bad move. The merc was sold for parts.J

i love this forum. so much info. i worked on the boat for most of the day on breaks and before and after work and didnt get the pictures like i wanted to after work. but i came to the conclusion i need a new water pump. I had our local mechanic stop by and he had the same idea. so atleast its a cheap fix and i think with all the great help from this site i can probably do it my self in a couple hours.

My force 50 won't pump water on muffs either, but in a 33 gal can it pumps fine and doesn't overheat. Not sure why but my local shop said if it runs fine in a barrel, then run it in a barrel. makes sense

Aaron, if you get her running right and get the maintenance squared away you'll have a nice little motor. Don't worry about what others may say/think about your Force. Your's may very well be putting around for years to come. Good luck...
