I had it running before, but the idle was miserable and wouldn't hold. Wfter replacing the plugs, the coils and wires, and checking the carb... It idles great, but runs like hot dung.
Heres a video
Anybody knowledgeable of these engines? I sure am not. My knowledge of engines drops at the 90s.

Im suspecting bad wires somewhere or a short, related to ignition system. Since the whole fuel system is very.

I see you dinking around with the throttle plate with your fingers. "Idle" occurs with a closed throttle plate. Opening the throttle plate without advancing spark will make it run like that.

Sounds like throttle plate is open too early.----Runs lean then because idle circuit does not work.
Actually found it and it worked perfectly, thank you. Still, this engine isnt golden. But, you helped it run leagues better than an hour ago.

Yeah the "dinking around" part as you kindly put it was because we were aware of some play between the throttle and choke and thought it might be because of that but didn't actually rev it as you said earlier. the thing you saw move was the choke which contributed to the rpm spike not, nevving. Anyway, the the issue which Racerone pointed out seemed to fix it.

get a service manual for your oldy and it will last another generation if given TLC
I plan to at some point, I'm looking for one that cost less than the engine though. I got the boat, engine, and trailer for 200. It'll be a minute before i fix everything enough to eclipse the worth of the manual to which id be more comfortable spending that much on one.

So far ive been extremely happy with it (when it runs) and have a long road ahead of me with the restoration.

have you considered joining AOMCI where oldies are the main topic. your engine is only 45 some years old but you would have access to the johnson 400+ pages service manual free to download. The book does not cover your newer model of course but your engine's ancestry is in there minus electricals and GC and you get tons of support like this site does.

Sounds like what is called a Link and Sync, needs to be done. Actually quite easy on this motor.

That could be one of the issues on this motor. Ill have to take a look and see if the butterflies line up on full throttle. First ill have to get a new throttle cable though. Just recently the sleeve popped out of the crimp and the crimp is cracked.
