Running motor out of gas?

1988 150 Black Max<br /> I was told by an old salt that unhooking the fuel lines , after each use, and running the motor dry of fuel is one of the best preventive maintenance issues for motors. Anyone have an opinion on this subject?<br /> Thanks , Dead Eye

bad advice... you are also running it out of oil<br />at the same time. better advice, pump your primer<br />bulb once in a while to put freash gas into carb.<br />especially if it sits long periods. will help it<br />from varnishing up as the gas evaporates.

What did the "old salt" say running the gas out did for the motor? Beside the lube protection mentioned above...I've found running the gas out makes the carbs get plugged up quicker when I let motors sit for several months between use. Gas stays in the carbs a long time before evaporating but I like the idea of squeezing the bulb to keep them full.

Very debatable subject. My 1980 2 Stroke 50 has always been run out of fuel by previous owner.<br />It's done 822 hrs and still goes well.<br />I do something slightly different now and follow the advice of 12Footer.<br />I run ALMOST out of gas. That is.. run it until it starts to speed up then turn off. Multi carb motors may have 2 cyinders running with no lube until the rest of the carbs empty.<br />I also monthly run on the muffs to keep impeller from drying up and add I stabiliser to fuel.<br />Just my $.002<br /><br /> http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=001455

Stabil in the tank and fuel system, is the best prevention for storage. I always pump up the bulb about once a month. Don't know if it helps, but it can't hurt to get some "Fresh" fuel in the bowls...

It is nothing but bad for your motor to do this. Maybe for winter storage, but not after every use. Even for winter storage I don't think it's a good idea. Gas doesn't go bad very fast. I never EVER use stabilizer in anything, and I've never had a problem. All of my equipment sits 6-9 months every year full of gas. And as others have said, the main reason you SHOULD NOT do this is because of the lubrication.

We used to run the old '59 rude out of gas after each use, but it had to be laid down in the back of the car, so we didn't want gas leaking all over.<br /><br />YOu think thats bad, dad has yet to change his impeller on his 1984 15hp johnny, or his 96 25hp mariner. He refuses to let me touch them. Says they're fine.
