RUNNING MOTOR WITHOUT PROP

AFTER GETTING STUCK LAST WEEKEND AT SOME BUOY,I WAS INTERESTED TO KNOW IF I COULD RUN MY 9.9 1974<br />EVINRUDE MOD.#10425S IN A DRUM TO SEE IF THE REBUILT CARB.WILL PERFORM GOOD IN THE BARREL BEFORE I TAKE IT OUT FISHING.<br />LAST TIME I HAD IT OUT IT STARTED SURGING HIGH AND<br />LOW UNTIL IT FINALLY CONKED OUT.<br />I HAD PUT IN A NEW WATER PUMP,FUEL PUMP, AND PLUGS<br />BUT NO SUCCESS.<br />I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR ADVICE ON THIS PROBLEM.<br /><br />THANKS A LOT<br />CHARLIE BOOM BOOM<br />MEMB.#20518

Leave the prop on when running it in a barrel.<br /><br />The only way you'lle be able to "power test" it is back out on the water. If you try it in the drum, the water will fly, and if you take the prop off it will sound like your name here.

I've run small motors in a drum with the gear engaged. If you run it reasonably slow, in Reverse, the water does a better job of staying in the barrel. Some's going to splash out, of course, and you have to keep adding from the hose. This is about as close as you can practically get to an "under load" test without having the boat in the water.

Or you can trailer it to the boat ramp, put the trailer/boat/motor in the water and check it out. Barrels are good tools, but if you don't have one you don't have one.
