Running new Temp Gauge Wire - 2 Sizes same wire

My 2002 Crownline with 4.3 Volvo Penta has a 12 GA wire to the temperature guage, and a 14 GA wire at the sender at the engine. I'm running a new wire, does it matter what size I run? Thank you for any input on this

I used 14GA, ran new wire, now no temp reading at all. I have power to the gauge, did the ground test where the needle "spiked". Any ideas? New sensor perhaps?

Volvo has never used more than 16 ga wires from the engine to the helm for any of the sender wires or even ignition or start. The temp sender should have a tan wire on it. If the gauge pegs, you probably have a faulty sender.

Thanks Don. When I turn on the ignition, the gauge stays still, no movement at all. The ground is good and there is power to the gauge. I ran the engine for about 4 minutes at 2500 RPM and zero movement on the dial. I guess I'll try a new sensor unless you have any other ideas (thermostat was just changed).

Don, how many temperature sensors in my 4.3GLA? I replaced the sending wire to the sensor next to the thermostat, and replaced the sensor (Volvo part #872066). Is this the proper sensor, or the one for the alarm? I see another sensor in the attached schematic that may be on the manifold (#19, Volvo Part #3852215) Did I replace the wrong sensor? Thank you for your input

There is only one gauge sender on your engine, it has a tan wire going to it. There are 3 alarm switches, with tan/black stripe wires. One near the gauge sender, the other 2 are on the exhaust risers.

ok, I see a sender on the thermostat housing. Is that for the alarm? If so, is there a sender to the gauge on the manifold?

You can see it, I can't. What color is the wire going to it???????

The sensor on the thermostat housing is 2 colored, and must be for the alarm. I removed the middle hose and found what must be the temp sensor (tan wire as you said) sitting under the thermostat housing on the intake manifold. No OHM reading from it tells me that I need a new sensor!

Not sure about yours exactly but does it look like this?

Temp Sender

That's what I replaced mine with since it was in stock locally and it works great.
