My Suzuki DF200 just started running rough the other day at idle. We eventually found out that it was running on 3 cylinders.

Anybody know what could cause this??

Re: running on 3 cylinders at idle

oh yeah, I thought it should be mentioned that I am approaching 1000 hours on this engine. I have not had a problem until now.
The problem seemed to occur suddenly. We were out for the day (8 hrs) and the problem didn't start until the very last hour....out of the blue!

Some thoughts from the experts and/or owners would be greatly appreciated.

check/clean spark plugs, check wires, fuel delivery, filters, pumps, etc.

Re: running on 3 cylinders at idle

thanks for getting back to me boys....I dropped it off at a Suzuki authorized dealer because it is still under warranty.
I checked the plugs and they are very clean (too clean maybe?)
Knowing that it might be something with the stator really helps, especially if I suspect it doesnt get fixed properly

I'll keep you posted

thanks

Re: running on 3 cylinders at idle

if you don't already have one, buy a fuel/water seperator at Walmart $25, mount on transom, really will help with keeping your fuel clean and eliminate a lot of water/dirty fuel problems. also use Stabil or Seafoam all the time to keep gas fresh. Yamaha Ringfree or similar product(ask your boat dealer) is another very good preventive maintenance item. these all cost money but nothing like problems that require trips to boat dealer. I understand your motor is still under warranty, but that will end one day, and you'll have to be responsible for your motor's preventive maintenance. Good Luck!

Re: running on 3 cylinders at idle

Thank you Robert...My fuel is fresh and since I put 300 hrs on my boat every season, I change my Racor filter twice (per season).
The low and high pressure water filters were changed this season also, so given that the fuel end of things was taken care of, I am pretty sure that it is not a fuel problem....but then again...yah never know sometimes right?
