Launched the Whaler for the first time this spring over the weekend. The boat landing is on a piece of the Wisconsin River that is the first open from the ice and where the current is the least strong and makes for easy launching and landing.

So I pull up and I'm readying the boat for launch and the fella next to me is launching a small aluminum fishing boat with a 60's era 10hp motor. While I'm unlatching the straps he's pull-starting his motor. Now I usually like to give my motor a quick crank just to make sure I don't launch with a dead battery. He actually got his started and was throttling the hell out of it. And then he kept it running for a few minutes while the damn thing hung in the air.

I was about to mention to him the damage he probably just did but he had that "I just killed my mom and stuffed her in the trunk" look to him and I didn't feel like a confrontation.

Now here's the ironic part. After all that I launch and am putting out to the channel to punch her up to WOT. I'm watching him launch, get in his boat and ROW out to the channel. Amazingly enough, he got it started and I watched it pee just fine. They must've put one hell of a water pump system in those old motors or that guy is one of the lucky ones.

he'll only do that a few times. I have learned to never start them out of water. I used to start ours for just a second on the ramp before getting it wet. After a few times it needed an impeller.
