Re: Running on empty?
I have a 1996 hydra sports bay skiff with a bad fuel sending unit and no easy way to get at it. There is an access hatch under console to the left of the sending unit, but can not see it.How do I attempt to change out the sending unit without removing the console? can the sending unit be relocated to more accessible location toward the middle of the tank?
I don't think anyone here can tell you how to change out the sending unit without removing the console. An experienced marine mechanic fan probably figure it out. Or, as a couple people suggested, you can cut an access hole in the deck and install a screw in plate over it. Check your favorite marine retailer. "Beckson" is one brand.
Relocating the sending unit would be far more difficult. It's very dangerous to do any cutting or machining on a gasoline fuel tak once gasoline has been stored in it. Any flame or spark could cause an explosion.
If you cannot figure out how to replace the sending unit, and don't want to pay someone to do it, you can install a fuel management system that tracks your use of fuel. Fill the tank and it tracks how much you have used. If you know the capacity, you will know how much is left.
This will cost more than having a mechanic replace the sender, but it's a pretty neat and accurate system.
