Running power for an hds gen2 5 & 8 and structure scan

I'm getting ready to install an hds5 on the bow and an hds8 on the console along with structure scan. Would it make sense to mount a separate fuse block and run all three of them through it? I was also going to put a toggle switch on the structure scan line so I can independently turn it off so it doesn't draw. Would this be a sufficient way to set it up? I'm thinking about running 10 gauge from the designated fuse block back to the battery.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the hardware that you're installing, but since no one else has replier to your post I will give you some general rules. Your idea sounds good, but you should put a vapor proof fuse holder in the 10 gauge wire at the battery. Fuse it larger than the total of the recommendation for the three appliances but no larger than 40 amps. Install fuses in the separate fuse box of the size that the manufacturers specify for each appliance.
I am assuming that the new fuse box will be outside of the engine compartment and therefore will not need to be vapor proof.

The HDS 8 only draws 900 mA which isn't much (.9a). I have two 7's connected together and just tapped into the existing wiring feed under the dash. I did install separate fuses for them (supplied with the kit) and they work just fine. A 10G wire seems overkill.
I don't have structure scan so can't comment on the draw of that accessory but a quick google search should let you know. I doubt you would need a separate switch for it but others might comment.

I have the HDS 7 with the LSS-1 StructureScan module (Gen 1). My dealer installed the system at the time I purchased my boat. He did put the StructureScan module on my Accessory rocker switch to activate it separate from the HDS 7. I actually like it because I only use StructureScan at certain times and usually only when fishing. It's one less thing running whether I use it or not.

Thanks for the info. Here's what I'm thinking. The system is being installed in a 19' bass boat. I plan on mounting the additional fuse block in the dry storage in front of the console. I'm thinking I will also mount the structure scan box next to the new fuse block and install a toggle on the structure scan line that will allow me to separately turn of the ss. I'll also send both hds units to the new fuse block with everything going through its own 3 amp fuse. From the fuse block, I'll run 10 gauge back to the cranking battery and install a 20 - 30 amp fuse just off of the battery. I'm surely no electrician so i guess i'm wondering if this will this be sufficient?

Sounds like a good plan. 10 gauge wire will handle 30a which is way more than enough current to run all your new electronics. Never got to play with a ss but friends who have them swear by them. Sounds like the ss pulls more current than a standard transducer so putting it on a separate switch makes sense.

Everything is installed, powered up and appears to be working properly. Hope to water test next weekend. I ended up running all transducer cables though their own split wire wrap. Hopefully that will help eliminated potential interference.

Is this a split wrap for wire, or a split wrap made of wire? I've been looking for a metal cover for exterior wiring to protect it from munchers.

It's the flexible split wrap for wire.

Darn! I guess I'm still looking for a metal covering.
