hi all,

I have a 1989 johnson gt 150, starts relatively easily but refuses to stay running more than a few minutes on muffs and while in the water nothing but coughing. i just replaced the spark plugs and seemed to make it run better. i have cleaned the carbs and replaced jets, new fuel line, filters. will be doing link and sync but what else can i do? from what i can tell all 6 cylanders are firing, thanks

check the red lever on the choke is in the auto direction (fuel addition solenoid) I think it should be pointing down the body of the solenoid.

Your description of "coughing" while idling sounds like a diagnosis of "lean sneeze". This is when the small idle passages in the carbs get restricted with dried fuel gelatin and then runs lean. The symptoms are that the engine will seem to sneeze, or miss every few rpm's. If so, this is a lean condition in the carbs. A thorough cleaning of the idle passages in the upper carb body will cure the problem. You'll need a special aerosol cleaner that will actually dissolve dried fuel, such as a Gumout type product. If the engine has problems with continued running after it starts to warm up, it's possible that you have a weak ignition component. Any weak component can start to break down as the engine heats up to normal operating temps. It may run fine when cold, then fail as it warms up. So, re-test for spark after the engine is well warmed up. 700 rpm's is a good, normal idle speed. It's set to that rpm when the boat is floating normally in the lake and in forward gear.
