Re: Running rich?? Newbie here - 1989 merc 200hp 2-stroke O/B

thanks everyone,
this weekend i will be working and testing all these theories out.

starting with:
1) emptying fuel/water sep to see if any h20 in tank.
if yes, throwing in some drygas additive. (Startron)

2) thought of putting an extrernal gas tank with new fresh E10 fuel and see if she is still running rough?
if no, then the existing tank is bad.

I have about 25 gallons left before empty- i'll try to use it up before putting in E10.

Would it hurt to do a decarb with Seafoam with the old fuel or should I wait until i run down low and add more fuel in for a decarb?

Also, i haven't started in since Tuesday- will see how well it does.

thanks dualie.

went out again this weekend to fire her up and i got the same exact issues at the very first post here.

i emptied the fuel/water sep (dark purple) and brought its contents to a merc mechanic. he said that the fuel was darker than his weed wacker. he said it sounded like the oil was still being sucked in after i killed the engine.

thanks jsr21!!

i think you are spot on!!

that merc mechanic said he suspects that my carbs are filled with oil and thats why it wants to start, meaning it revs up but then dies immediately.

he told me to do the following:
1) loosen the 3 bolts that hold together the carb bowls and let the oil in the carb drain out.
2) prime my fuel into a bucket until the fuel is clear and doesn't looks like grape juice.
3) tighten her back up and start up!

does this sound about right?

ps. how challenging is it to replace this check valve?

thanks very much!

Dualie, it is a very simple process to change the check valve.
Until you get around to changing it, after running the engine and you are done for the day, just loosen the oil tank cap and left the air escape.
I just changed the one under my onboard oil tank as it was allowing oil to run into the cowling and making a mess.

gents,

i pulled the boat out yesterday, a buddy of mine, towed me out- too challeging to work on in the water.

1) going to drain the left over fuel in the internal tank. (25 gallons)

2) drain oil from carbs. (merc mechanic told me how)

3) throw on a pony tank with fresh gas and start engine with muffs. need to test before going forward with step 4.

4) would like to replace check valve in motor for oil issue.

5) so, is it reletively easy to replace this valve? i am going to give it a shot.

6) can anyone tell me what the specific name of the check valve is? i have a 1989 Merc Black Max O/B v200 XL serial number: C158173
probably need to check around to see who has one?

thanks a million!!

i just found this incredible website for parts for Merc engines. just need serial number and zip code.

perhaps, you have been there already.

throw this into your browser and have at it.

http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/PartsExpress/HomePage/homepage.asp

click on parts for Merc marine products and serial # and zip code and voila!

haven't found a check valve yet or even what it looks like.

Look under oil injections components...I believe the one you need is number 24....pn 21-878105 1....and it screws into the side of the right side of the block (if you are standing behind the boat looking at it) about 3/4 down and has a oil hose attached to it....really easy. But confirm with a shop or someone for sure that is the part number you need. good luck

well that worked like a champ!!
checked it out with the merc meachanic and that part number was right on.
performed the work this weekend- actually all of the above from the earlier posts.
the engine ran great and the smoke show oil issue appeared to disappear. it does smoke a little, which I know is good. seemed like the right fix!!

thanks to all for spelling it out for me!! i am learning fast and i still enjoy boating after all the PIA's it carries with it.

A little late now, I know, but if you had searched the posts I had posted a solution for this problem last year. I tore my hair out trying everything until I stumbled on the answer. I removed the oil reservoir cap after 2 weeks of sitting and there was still pressure. Checking further I found oil in the carbs, no gas just oil, looks like after shutdown the check valve is supposed to bleed off the pressure from the tank. The tank holding pressure for more than 10-15 min is not normal.

Sorry I didnt see this earlier, but I've not been on the board in a while. you can also search using my login name "ROBALOFISH" and you will find some other 200 hp info.....
By the way now when I start it I
1) Be sure engine is tilted all the way down. (so gas runs in the carbs not out)
2) Advance throttle only foward out of the neutral zone "very little" if any throttle.
3) Turn key ON push in to prime
"HOLD FOR COUNT OF 10" << very important
4) Start, be prepared to give short jab of prime if it needs it.

My engine has never run so great.
