Running Rich??

My boat had been running rich the second year I ran it. Black smoke at startup, hard startups. So I adjusted the choke as my dealer advised me, and replaced the plugs with double platinums, and it ran a heck of a lot better last year, but when I took it up to this lake which is higher in elev. about 7-8k, I really had a heck of a time starting it- which caused me to damage my prop, but thats another story. Anyway, after I started it, it ran fine. Does it need more air? I'm open to any advice I can get. Thanks...

Hope you realize that unlike fuel injection, with a carburated engine there are times that you need to advance the throttle and sometimes you will have to pump it to aid start up

i am too old.. i forget that some folks have only ever driven fancy computer controlled things that simply just fire up and run.. he he<br /><br />carb starting tips... if u think its too rich (flooded) give it full throttle dont pump it at all.. run the starter motor for one long period till it fires up.. then back off the throttle.. if it dont fire up after twenty seconds give it a rest then try again.. if it dont fire up after several tries.. leave it for an hour then try again..<br /><br />if u think its too weak.. (choke not working) give it several pumps then partial throttle and give it a fairly short burst on the starter.. say about five seconds.. if it dont fire up give it some more pumps then try again.. each pump squirts a small amount of neat fuel into the carb barrel.. <br /><br />trog100

Drastically different elevations is certainly going to affect that motor. Rejetting is frequently necessary. Far fewer oxygen molecules in a given volume of air means there's less oxygen to allow the fuel to burn. Besides rejetting, changing the prop pitch and gear ratio are also frequently necessary. Especially above 5K'.
