Is it more efficient to run my '73 115 without the breather?

does it restrict any additional air flow?

No and no. I assume you're talking about the cover over the carbs. It won't breathe significantly easier without it and the motor would run noticably louder. Try it if you like, you won't do any harm. It just won't help, either.

I just ask because on our drag (snowmobile) sleds airboxes tend to restrict air flow and when we run with none it runs alot leaner

this is a bit off topic, but i think most new performance two strokes run tuned intake airboxes
for considerable increase in power. do later model outboards run these? and can they be retrofitted? sorry to hijack your question. :)

Shifty - I have seen quite a few post on this from some of the "heavies" on this site. They strongly recommend that you do not run without this cover as it changes the fuel air mix (runs leaner) which can fry the motor.

To run lean on a 4 stroke may be ok, but on a 2 stroke it means less oil to your engine. Not a good Idea!

Smitty

Pull the air box, install some velocity stacks, re-jet the carbs and you will get:

- Louder engine.
- Uses more fuel.
- More eratic HP curve.
- Maybe 1 or 2% more horsepower at WOT.

I don't think it's worth the effort.
