As most of you know I just completed a rebuild on my 1993 115 rude.. now here is my problem. last night i went out to start her up prior to taking her out in the am. I pumped the primer bulb and it never got hard. i think i over pumped it and flooded the motor. removed plugs they were wet with fuel. left plugs out and in the am reinstalled them. hit the key and she fired right up.. ran nice a smooth. today in the afternoon i fired her right up again, just with a tap on the primer switch.. so Got her all ready for fishing .. started her up again around 5 pm ran at idle for about 10 minutes checked for leaks and what not, shut her down and tried to restart her right then and there... now NG..not a pop!! pulled plugs.. a tad wet. let her sit a few hours NG..checked for spark seems like sometimes i have it and sometimes i don’t. spark tester real hard to see. did unplug main harness and jumped her.. seen spark, then didn't but have yet to see spark with the main harness plugged in. now maybe She is flooded again .plugs are wet spark tester is unreliable. All coil grounds have been cleaned. I thinking I will wake up in the AM and she will fire right up. Any thoughts??

Did have her out the other day put 3 hours on her but really never shut her off all day

I have yet to hit the bulb again to start her after i flooded her the other night. she did start up nice with just the primer.

HAve tried the trouble shooting with the amp meter but im a carpenter ..not an electrition. and Im having a hard time understanding any of that.

To cover the fuel delivery end, with the motor in the usual down position, remove the airbox to expose the carb throats.Squeeze the primer bulb and notice if any fuel dribbles out the front of the carbs. If it does you may need new needle valves/floats(carb kit).On the electrical side, maybe the coils or powerpack are giving out.

I'll do that in the am. I did rebuild the carbs and maybe i blew the float setting.. may just purchase a new PP. dang ..why not make everything new... I let yu know..

Unplugging the main harness and jumping her out and checking for spark shows me what?

Re: Runs great but then will not start

it shows you that the problem is in the harness probebly the ignition switch or safety kill switch or nutral kill switch.
i dont think you have a bad pp.
check the wires for cracks a small crack might short out your spark.

for the floading i would try it for a while because you put new needle and seat in.
it might get better after a while.
dont force the primer bulb easy does it.

i had to replace the tstats as you know and now shes running nicely.
boy you reaaly can tell the difference without the tstats in them.
i cant believe some people are running without them. those moters must run like crab.
i replaced the primersolenoid cover because one nipple broke off.

now she is ready to go to my mechanic and put her in the test tank and set the timing the way it should be.
when i'm gonna do that i'm noty sure probbebly somewere in ockt because i'm still running the 110 on my mako.
after the season i will switch motors
good luck hotrod
i'm sure it cant be mutch of a problem

reeldutch

yep unplug your wiring harnas and you can jump it right from the starter to turn it of switch the primer red lever on primer so it will kill the engine.
make sure everything is unplugged

reeldutch

Re: Runs great but then will not start

Checked stator and timerbase..no short to ground

Checked all coils, they are ok per ohm meter.

Am i checking my kill switch properly. have I excluded any problems under my console and with the key switch and kill switch. I am under the impretion that unplugging the singe bl/y wire to PP jumps out the kill.

Could I have bad temp switches. that are stuck, maybe in the used head i bought?... Does unplugging the main harness eliminate all this??

Re: Runs great but then will not start

I'm sure it's something simple, but I can,t go spending 250$ on parts just to see if it was the problem, my meter will not check the stator or timerbase, just for grounding. together they are about 400$.. looks like i'll just take her to my marine repair and let them sock it to me'.. all in all i am very happy with the rebiuld but this is over my head. let them fine tune her.... :(

would be nice to know if i eliminated the simple things, and not sure if i have

Re: Runs great but then will not start

thats exactly what i am gonna do.
we already saved a lot of money on the rebuild.
let a good mechanic check things out ,like timing and may be lean running conditions and we will have a motor for may be 15 years.
may be you pay him a couple hundred but you will have more piece of mind when youre out fishing.

good luck reeldutch

HotRod, I hope it is your stator. I just replaced mine thinking it would remedy my problem, but it didn't. Seems like there's quite a few of us in here having the same problem - weak or no spark.

Re: Runs great but then will not start

From your post, looks like ya' installed a new VRO pump? Did ya' check out the alarms associated with the pump? Are you going to run premix until the oil reservoir shows signs of using oil?......yea yea I know, bunch a' questions. But I got an intrest in this motor and we ain't gonna' let her blow...... :) :)
