It's the top story with several videos on Google News. It's a lot easier to read too, ;)

My question about the whole thing is why wasn't this one detected? We know exactly where the one that is going to miss today is and the size, 150'. But an estimated 10 ton chunk of rock goes completely under the radar? I know all this detection business is infant science. Is Bruce Willis on retainer just in case the big one shows up?

That's the first size I've seen. Thanks. I did read that it made a six foot crater so it couldn't have been all that big after some burned off.
I should have tossed in a few smilies in my first post.

All I can say is that Russia looks like a nice place.

As to size has anyone watched the explosion aftermath. From 35 miles the concussion or shock wave was incredible.

The Yahoo news story was easier to read but I love a challenge. :D

Bearing in mind that I'm not exactly fluent, the only things I saw here that I didn't see in the English articles were that:

They want people to take their kids out of school and take them home.
All the services (electricity, water, communications, etc.) are normal.
20,000 emergency service people have been mobilized.

Oh....and they don't expect any more meteor splinters to fall from the sky. :lol:

Re: Russian meteor this is a first

Looked like a bomb in the vid. ^^^^^

The Russians are capitalizing on it and making jokes. From one of the reports;

The panic and confusion that followed Friday's meteorite crash quickly gave way to typical Russian black humor and entrepreneurial instincts.

Several people smashed in the windows of their houses in the hopes of receiving compensation, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Others quickly took to the Internet and put what they said were meteorite fragments up for sale.

One of the most popular jokes was that the meteorite was supposed to fall on Dec. 21 last year — when many believed the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world — but was delivered late by Russia's notoriously inefficient postal service.

And this;

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a nationalist leader noted for his vehement statements, blamed the Americans.

"It's not meteors falling. It's the test of a new weapon by the Americans," the RIA Novosti news agency quoted him as saying.

The only difference between the American people and the Russian people is they both think the other is the enemy.

Glad it did not hit in a populated aria as that could have been messy.

"Russian Meteor this is a first"

-- Not exactly...

The near miss is a 150' comet in orbit that's been known about for a long time, the meteor was basically a piece of space junk a little bigger than a bathtub (as I heard it) which I imagine is pretty hard to detect until it hits the atmosphere...

I read that these things hit daily but usually land in the ocean.

I've read they strike with a frequency of 100 times per year.

I also believe (could be wrong) that by definition, a meteor never strikes the earth. If a meteor manages to survive getting through our atmosphere, it becomes a meteorite. Is that correct??

Yes, correct. . . Just be glad that this sort of thing did not happen 40 years go, else it might have been interpreted differently . . . These larger meteors sure do like the Russian continent . . .

It is sort of surprising that it was not detected, as some of he larger ones have. There is no telling on what percentage of the junk flying around in the solar system has actually been detected an mapped, etc.

I'm thinking that by daily, they meant hit a lot in the thing I read. I'v learned more about the terminology of these things in the last few days. There's a couple other terms too.
