Re: Rusted Manifold Bolts??

I would pull the engine and blow the heads off with a torch. Short of pulling it, I'd be thinking of breaking away the manifold as was suggested. Drilling at that angle will be a feat, and while a die grinder might work, you'll be hard pressed to put any pressure on it while holding it with one hand (you need a real compressor to run it, too). Fastest and most effective way would be to pull the engine...

Re: Rusted Manifold Bolts??

As stated in my 1st response, I have the same engine and had the same problem. very tight quarters. I used a 3/8 drill bit with a milwaukee 18 volt drill. Drill the heads off, then hit the manifold w/ a hammer. I know its going to be a tough access job,but dont let the job intimidate you. Sometimes you have to get rough w/her to show her who is boss.
When remounting the new manifolds, get 2 studs and screw them into the head, slide the manifold on the studs. The studs will support the manifold and hold the gasket in place until you get a bolt or two in the head.
I dont think I would grind the heads unless its a last resort. In order to see what you are doing your face will be in close proximity to the grinder and flying debris and sparks. Having steel dust removed from your eyes is no fun. Also cutting wheels tend to grab and can get away from you when your in an out of position setting. One good thing though, if the grinder does get your hand or other bodypart, you wont bleed out. The grinding/cutting disc carterizes as it removes a swath of meat.

Re: Rusted Manifold Bolts??

Well guys. Today was 65 degrees in New Eng so I decided to try something. I got a set of Matco bolt extractors(mechanic friend) and THEY WORKED...... I had to clean around the bolt 1st with a chizel and wire brush but they are all loose now so for rusted manifold bolts i recommend bolt extractors before drilling or grinding... and def. WAY before pulling the engine

Congrats! Nothing wrong with something being easier than you thought, huh? Sounds like you found the exact right tool for the job...

Yeah but I missed one and it figures that I couldn't get it out. Maybe a dremel tool will help..

Don't take this the wrong way, but it wouldn't have been fair otherwise! ;)

I would be afraid of a chunk of rusted metal would fly into the cylinder when you whack the long rod so I wouldn't attempt that way. I will drill the head off or grind with a dremel.
