Rusted Thrust Rod/Pin

Have a 92 70HP Evinrude and the "Thrust Rod" is rusted out and needs replacement. Found a new one online but it cost $112. Can anyone explain why this fancy bolt would cost so much? Can't imagine there is so much thrust that I need this "super" bolt. Shouldn't a 1/2" galvanized bolt work just as well? Would be a lot cheaper. I could probably even get a threaded stainless steel rod for a lot less than $112. I've never moved the placement of mine so there is no need for the spring and quick release of the original part. A nut and lock washer would be fine.

Anyone see any problems with this solution?

you are obviously running in salt water, a galvanized bolt won't last long, and will be a real pain to get out.

That $112.00 has got to be in error. In my book, the 1992 70hp part number for that pin is 337746 but for some reason is not listed in the price book. This is the rod that is secured by retaining rings.

There is also another 1992 70hp model that incorporates the usual type tilt/lock thrust rod (one end bent at a right angle, other end has a swivel lock lever and spring), which is 387278 and supercedes up to 436541 and it also lists for an outrageous price. I have a 2004 price book that lists it as $56.57

I checked my remaining stock but sorry to say I have neither style. What is the model number of your engine?

Do you have power trim? If so, you don't need the thrust pin.

$$ Sign of the times. Do what I did. Speedymetals.com will sell you a short piece of stainless steel rod for around 5 bucks plus postage. Drill a hole in each end for stainless steel cotter pins. Instant el-cheapo thrust rod.

Model is 70ELEND and this is a manual tilt motor.

I'm going to just fabricate this myself as $112 is just a crazy price for something that if it's like the original wasn't even stainless steel to start with. That's why I was wondering if this was some sort of "SUPER" steel or something required for the "enormous" amount of thrust coming from this motor.

I have called a few places so far and I have found 12 feet of the stainless steel bar I need for $26. Gonna check a few more shops to see if I can get a shorter piece. I would think I should be able to, just haven't found the right shop yet. If I do buy the 12 foot piece, I'll just have to start my own Thrust Rod business myself and sell off the remaining pieces.

Would a SS bolt and nylock nut not work?
I'm glad i got a shop to throw in that rod when i bought my used trim assembly.I had no idea they were that much!

The original in my motor was some kind of hard steel. I tried to drill cotter pin holes in it and couldn't touch it. I'm not smart enough to say whether that kind of strength is necessary. I suppose it could take quite a whack as the motor slams back down after jumping a log, but don't intend to test it that way.

Was able to get a SS Bolt with a matching nut for $6 that fits my motor. I'll add a pin to keep the nut from falling off and take my chances that the bolt can handle the thrust of the motor.

That model uses the old style lock rod as I mentioned previously. The ourboard repair shops should have a slew of them laying around, many would be like new. If your present fix should not work out, keep it in mind.

Your engine uses this type. The usual type tilt/lock thrust rod (one end bent at a right angle, other end has a swivel lock lever and spring), 387278, supercedes up to 436541.

I strongly suspect that whoever quoted you that high price was quoting a price on the PTT model rather than the manual tilt model.

ishopmarine was $112 maxrules $127. plus shipping. my local OMC supplier was 127.80 same as maxrules.
