Time to paint my aluminum Starcraft. I'm using a small air compressor and gun to spray on the Rustoleum Clean Metal Primer after the self etch stuff in a can. Do I thin down the primer with acetone like I do for the top-coat paint?????

Usually for spraying you need to thin it, unless you plan to clean a lot of gun clogs. at the very least be sure to strain it after mixing. cheesecloth strainers work well for this.

I just finished spraying that that stuff thinned 15% with acetone per instructions, and used a paper paint strainer. It could have used more acetone, maybe at least 15% more. Dried good and fast so no complaints but next time I'd use more thinner. It came out of the gun pretty slowly but considering I'm a complete novice it was a good thing or I'd be sanding sags outta that stuff too.

BTW - I used a conventional spray gun.

Re: rustoleum primer question......

I just primed mine with epoxy primer. I know self etching primer is the traditional way, but the guys at my paint shop in town all recommended the epoxy primer over the self etching primer. I mixed primer to hardener (2:1) and shot 2 coats. Turned out really good. Going to shoot 2 coats of my PPG base coat tomorrow, then finish my modifications to the trailer and get back on the water.

My epoxy primer thinned out nicely with the hardener mixed in. You will definitely need to thin that rustoleum with some reducer or whatever you are using. Every time I've shot rustoleum, it was too thick to shoot by itself and had to be thinned out.

Depends on the size of the Tip on the gun. If you're using a 1.4 (typical for a Harbor Freight HVLP gun) then 1 1/2 cups of Acetone per quart is just about perfect for shooting the primer. Worked great for me when I did mine.

I would suggest calling the Rusto Techs .. http://www.rustoleumibg.com/contactus.asp

Last time I called them they did suggest Acetone rather then what was printed on there data sheet. Call them for a second opinion. ( you might want to have handy the Product of whatever spray can self etching stuff you used to tell them for compatibilty ) ..

YD.
