Rustoleum questions

Just a couple of quick questions:

- Does anyone know what the general coverage is for a quart of the Rustoleum Topside?

- Is there any problems in using Topside below the water line if my boat only sees water for a few hours a week? If so, then what is the alternative paint for below the water line?

- If I wanted to come up with my own color, I should buy white and add in oil paint until I get the right color, right? Would this be the sort of oil paint to add? http://shop.hobbylobby.com/store/item.aspx?ItemId=158992.

- Also, how much should the added oil paint be thinned down before being added to the Rustoleum?

Re: Rustoleum questions

Welcome to iBoats!

Check out Page#10 on my "My Flamingo" thread listed below. It has all the info you need on how to apply Rustoleum Paint and the hardener additive. You can PM me if you want additional information. You don't need the topside paint. The Rustoleum Professional Oil Based is plenty good enuf. One quart will yield about two coats on a 16 foot fiberglass hull using the formula i give.

I love that you posted this because I have all the same questions! Primarily on coverage.

Re: Rustoleum questions

Thanks Wood. I did read your post on page 10 and that's where my questions came from. :) I mainly want to make sure I get the right oil based paint from Hobby Lobby for mixing up my own color (I need a maroon/burgundy). I'll probably spray on 4-6 coats for safe measure, so 2-3 quarts outta do. MUCH cheaper than doing a fresh gel coat job, and I'm really glad you made that post in your "Flamingo" thread! I'll take a look more in depth from home and see if I still have questions.

Re: Rustoleum questions

For Maroon, You need to do this...

Start with a primary red color. Add a small amount of primary blue (you can always add more later, but too much will make purple), and then add black until you achieve the tone or value of maroon that you desire. Start with small quantities and thin with acetone to the consistency of runny ketchup. then mix with the paint. One cup of red and then teaspoon of blue and 1/4 tsp of black. Then adjust. Keep track of your formula.

Re: Rustoleum questions

Oh, here's a question I just thought about. If I wanted to get a metallic or flake look, would it be possible using the Rustoleum... or am I limited just to solid colors?

Re: Rustoleum questions

Well that's a bummer. :( No big deal, though. I'm sure it will still end up looking great without flake/metallic!

If I put on 4-6 coats, would I need to apply a clear coat to it afterwards or just paint it and buff/wax it out?

Re: Rustoleum questions

I used Rustoleum Metallics on the top side of my last boat. I THINK it's only available in rattle cans but I could be wrong. It didn't do real well. Didn't gloss up hardly at all. So I cleared it with their clear and that didn't hold up well at all. I'd say stick to the solids (and don't use rattle cans).

Thinking ahead on my restoration I had the same paint question... for maroon too. Two birds (sorry fmjnax), one stone. Awesome.
