I finally got my boat off of my trailer. The boat needs a complete restoration and so does the trailer. Whats the best way to delete this rust? Take it off piece by piece and grind it off and repaint?

I'm going to buy new shocks and springs. Do you think I need new steel tubing for this rebuild or can i salvage this? If anybody has any ideas please let me know, thanks!

Ospho rust remover works very well. You can get it at most hardware stores. Looks like surface rust to me. I have seen far worse. If you use this stuff be shure not to use it over concrete. It will eat it up. http://www.ospho.com/

Re: rusty rusty

the previous owner said its a break trailer. It breaks in the middle or something like a dump truck. are these expensive to replace? What is the name of these kinds of trailers?

also, thanks for the ospho tip. I've never heard of that. I'm pretty new to all of this. Thanks!

Sand blast or media blast.

Thats exactly what I was thinking.

I dont own an air compressor or a sand blaster. I'm checking with craigslist to see what I can find. How much CFM does a sand blaster typically use?

Re: rusty rusty

Take it to a industrial sand blast shop. They will make quick work of it for $200.00-$300.00 dollars

Re: rusty rusty

is that all it costs? I thought it would be more. Thats why I was pricing them out.

Also, With this being a break away trailer would converting this to bunks be an issue?

Yea if you go to an industrial type place, not an automotive place it will be cheaper. They do large stuff and have bigger equipment. Equipment you couldn't use an a car as it would warp the sheet metal. It goes much faster which = cheaper

Not sure what you are referring to as "break away" does it tilt or something?

2nd the blasting.

I have had good success with Sherwin-Williams DMT coating for top color on metal exposed to wet conditions.

Re: rusty rusty

That looks like an older Hosclaw trailer. Amazon sells the shocks but the springs are near impossible to get.

It does not look like a tilt trailer since I do not see a connector....... I see where there might be a tilt pin but no lock.

The rust does not look that bad and I would imagine a good sanding followed by some epoxy primer will serve your needs and save you money too.

Re: rusty rusty

Agree that it looks like surface rust. I would also suggest stripping as much hardware as possible before taking it in to be stripped/blasted. Or a 4" angle grinder with flap disc sanding wheels will make short order of it. just remember to use a finer grit as they can become very aggressive while sanding.

I too do not see where it would tilt if that's is what's being infered by a break-away.

POR 15 or rust bullet. Just wire brush off the loose stuff and paint it on.

Re: rusty rusty

I wouldn't call that rust. come on down here to the coast and see some rust.

I'd' have to see the mechanism where the tongue joins the Y but I doubt it tilts. Not sure I've seen a dual axle tilt. Just make sure all your rollers roll and you will be OK. Even though you're in brackish and fresh, give it a good rinsing when you use it.

Re: rusty rusty

here is a better picture of the trailer tilting. Is this feature even wanted in a trailer? Should I just weld it closed? seems like it would be more trouble then its worth. Im going to buy a sand blaster after some thought. I like the idea of having projects like this and the more tools I own rather then contract out the better, Right?

Anybody know the name of this trailer so I can get springs/shocks for it? Thanks!

My Father had a tilt trailer like that with rollers. We only used it a few times when launching in shallow water.

As to the DIY sandblaster you are talking about buying... I hope you have a LARGE compressor. If not it will take forever. An industrial blaster will blast that thing in like 30 min if they take their time. As noted it will destroy all of the plastic and wires so you will have to remove them.

Ive done them all three ways... DIY home blaster, DIY sander, dropping it off at a blast place.
Ill never waste my time again. That's coming from a guy who prefers to do most everything himself.

Re: rusty rusty

If you can get a deal for someone to do it for you cheap then that is definitely the way to go. If you are fundamentally opposed to paying then borrow a compressor and buy a harbor freight sand blasting unit for $50 but expect to spend a long time waiting for the compressor to fill.

Wear a good mask and use other media than plain play sand. It blasts fine particles of silica in the air and can mess up your lungs seriously. There is blasting sand that has an additive that will keep the free silica down. I used coal slag as an example...worked well but ate the sand blaster nozzle after two bags.

Google Por15. You'll have to top coat it but it will be the last time you'll ever have to paint it again. Used on show car chassis, oil derricks, etc.

Re: rusty rusty

first, I don't know why you'd blast the galvanized coatnig off a trailer. Second, why spend any money making an old trailer pretty? It's for function, not show. Unless you are one of these guys who waxes his lawnmower.

Tilt trailers are great. Used to be all you saw before the EZ load rollers. The object is to launch/load with the axles dry--then you don't rust them out, esp. the brakes. Now everyone uses "float on" and wonder why they have rust issues. Get an old timer to show you how it works; you might convert.

You need to install a short piece of chain to keep the trailer from tilting too much, and alse have a good latch, even though the weight of the boat when it's all the way up helps

Re: rusty rusty

Not sure if it even was galvanized from the factory. Well, 40 years was a good run for the finish to come off even if it was. It's time for a new skin. Even though it does function well, I still want to make it look decent. It's a pride thing. Same reason I make the bed every morning i guess.

I do wash off my mower if it gets too dirty. Same with my 4wheeler. I cant have a restored boat on a non restored trailer. I don't do things half way.

Yeah, watched some youtube videos on how to launch a tilt trailer. looks kinda cool.

Launching with the tires dry work with almost every ramp? Steep or shallow? Would any trailer springs/shocks work with this?
