just go to harbor freight get a 41/2" grinder and a wire brush for it and have at it

If it were me I would blast the trailer and repaint the trailer if for no other reason than to keep the surface rust from becoming thru rust. Plus if your going to restore the boat why have it sit on a ugly trailer. I would take it to be blasted unless you are planning on buying a monstrous air compressor it will take forever to do a trailer that size yourself. If you do blast it make sure to at least get it in primer right away or it will start to surface rust again within a matter of days.

So I bought an air compressor. It's rated 12cfm at 90psi. Hopefully its enough for a sand blaster.

This sunday my dad wants me to help him build a corvair motor for his airplane so I will not have time to blast it until middle of next week if there is no rain.

northern VA has been spotty at best with the weather lately.

How can I tell if the springs are bad? I know that the shocks are gone. springs are as bouncy as ever i guess. I'm not sure what to look for. Should I just blast and paint them also?

Well, Doing the sand blasting myself wasnt such a good idea. Should have listened to you guys. Turns out it would be perfect for spot blasting. but not a whole trailer. I tried 2 different sand blasters and 2 different types of media for it. Both with marginal performance. What did work was an angle grinder and 20 minutes of bending over!

Here is a sanded and painted one next to the other side untouched. It wont win any awards but at least it looks decent from 5 feet away. Thats good enough for me.

The fender looks OK in the picture. :)

I've done 2 so far. Both with an angle grinder and a flap disc. "Works for me," too.

Have you put any thought into getting some type of coating on the inside of the tubes. You do not want the rust to come from the inside out either. Not sure how you would do it, they are long and they have bends in them, just a thought.

I have a large 60gal compressor and its still to small for blasting. I have a blaster but I use it for small stuff. I am restoring a tractor and I took all the big pieces to the local industial shop.

i didnt give that any thought. any ideas how to do that?

The only thing that comes to mind right now is some type of long rod or extending brush handle with a rag attached to the end that you could work up inside. It probably would work, it would also use a lot more paint than spraying. I think you would need to wet it, then maybe pour some in the tube behind it that you could work back into and take it forward to coat with. I would try to use something that kills rust and leaves a protective coating on the metal. Then if it did not match your outside paint you could put a little paint in the ends of the tube and no one would ever notice.

Your paint job looks pretty good for a "Rattle can restoration" just remember to paint in a few light coats instead of one heavy one to avoid runs in the paint. You can shoot it with some clear coat in a can to help keep it looking nice.

Just dropped my boat and trailer both off at the sandblaster for completion. His rate: $65/hour. He has all kinds of media, and also does both large and small type jobs. I am pumped. My trailer was in good shape, but had 2 or three coats of old and chipping paint I wanted gone, and the boat did too. I spent a few hours on the boat itself with paint stripper and a wire wheel on my drill, and then said 'screw it'. The blaster will provide the end result I want, and I'll have waay less in it than I would in buying strippers. Paint stripper that is.
