Well I can't add much to what has already been said, I have RV'd all over the country and have owned several different variants of RV's including Class C, Class A and also did a stint with a Upscale Prevost Coach, all had their plus and minus sides..

But the one thing, I will say is a prerequisite, you MUST watch the Robin Williams Movie RV before trying it, it really does put things in perspective!

If you or a good friend have AAA, get a trip tic with possible routes and ask for the RV campgrounds books. They will list every campground and all the rules you will need for your Class C or A or whatever...

Also, I would consider putting a "Want to Rent" ad in Craigslist for the class you want to rent. Many RV owners will make a good deal with you to help offset some costs of ownership.

If the RV (even commercial rental) tires are 5 or 6 years old, don't rent that RV. Most RVers replace their tires after 5-7 years, even if they have not driven far... Date checks on tires are easy to do... Google it... Also, you may want to join one of the free forums like rvforum.net or rv.net for more tips on renting or what to watch for in a rental company...

Strokeoluck, One of my dream vacations is to do the houseboat thing in Voyageurs Natl park. Its kind of like the RV thing but with a big boat instead..

Glad you enjoyed your trip. If you are a handy mechanical person and you have the room to park at your house look into purchasing. You can get a 10yr old class A, C, 5th wheel or travel trailer for a great price. Just keep in mind that an older unit requires you stay up with maintenance and repairs but that is actually part of the fun and experience in my mind. I am actually preparing to start full timing myself hopefully by the end of this year. I am probably going to go the 5th wheel route with slides as you get more headroom and an overall roomier feel. Take a look at Craigslist and Ebay and price a few units, you will be surprised. As mentioned above defiantly visit the rv forums just like Iboats you will learn everything you need to know.

+1 but I need to add 1 more suggestion: if you need to run your heater, instead purchase an inexpensive electric heater from say, Walmart or Target type store. Better to use the campgrounds electricity (that you're already paying for) than your propane tanks and with propane over $3.00/gal you'll be glad you did.

Agree with this completely. Get one with a thermostat and multiple speed fans so you can keep the noise down from it but stay warm when needed.

ok, first i apologize for the following statement. i saw this thread when it first started, just after watching rv with robin williams. again i apologize, and hope your trip goes way, way better than his did.
