???'s about my new inline 1400!!!

i was wondering if someone could tell me a few things about this motor. the ser. # is 4866506 and the model # is 8526622. the motor is a 1978 merc. inline 6 cyl. outboard thats all i know. i would like to find out how easy i can get parts for this motor, should i be able to expect this motor to charge a batt. or should i recharge every time, AND WHAT THE WOT IS ON THIS MOTOR. and basically any other info. someone can give me on this particular motor. thanks and happy boating. toocan

The 1978 Merc 1400 iwas the new name given to the 1977 Merc 1500, when the Merc 150HPV6 was introduced. It has 150HP at the crank. Parts are plentiful, but ignition parts are pricey.

The motor has an unregulated 6Amp charging system, consisting of a stator and a full wave rectifier. If you put a voltmeter on the battery, and rev the motor from idle to 1500RPM or so, you should see the voltage rise. if so, the charging system is good. If no rise in voltage, it is likely the rectifier is bad.

Prop it to run 5500-5800 or so, at WOT.
