Newbie here thanks for help yesterday

Posted a question yesterday got some great answers have several more.

The boat is Monark v175 with 150 Johnson OB

Problem is when I put boat in water idles starts right up ideles fine pull out and runs great at all speeds. Then after trolling or low speed or stopping will not load up on high end. If I push in choke on key will get up and move. was worst at higher altitude. While on lake yesterday if we turned red knob on choke engine would respond as normal but after stopping had to do same. i believe motor came from lower altitude. I just bought it three weeks ago and prveious owner only had for year and took out three times. Step son is Ford macanic and will help with problems just not sure with out books.

1 Bought Seloc manual said J150TLCRD motor 84 not 85 correct?

2 Compression checked all cylinders right around 70 I am between 5000 and10000 feet above sea level commpression done at 10000. how much loss due to altitude?

3 Did spark check strong blue spark at 7/16 but no where to gap plug.

4. Marine store said Seloc not in print anywhere to find store or on line? Seloc as good as OEM?

5. Marine store said to remove VRO and premix fuel?

6 Is there way to clean carbs on motor? or remove?

Thank you all for response yesterday hope to get as much help todayd:)

The ONLY way to clean carbs is to remove, tear down, clean and re-assemble with new parts from rebuild kit. If motor came from sea level, you clearly need to rejet for higher altitude anyway.

If VRO is working, why would you want to disable it, unless it was never upgraded via a service bulletin to VRO2?

How did you check compression? I would expect somewhat higher, but those V6's tend to read pretty low.

OEM manual is clearly the best .. no reason to even consider a third party book.

i don't know about the compression at that elevation. i'm a sea level man. you are correct it is 1984. marine store may be correct due to elevation. and vro not mixing correctly, ???, make sure your carbs are in the correct position #393773 is top and bottom carb,, #39374 is middle carb. seloc is vague, OEM engine specific is the only one to have. kencooke.com has the reprints of the OEM service manual #394607 pricey @ $120.00. see if you can find one on ebay. agree with wilde 1i

Probably meand the manual lever on the primer solenoid Walker.

If you need to turn the manual lever to make the engine run then you likely got a fuel supply problem or the carbs need a cleaning and overhaul.

If your not having any problems with the fuel pump or getting alarms, I wouldn't think that's the problem.

Is this a new rig to you?

the plugs are a bosch eqivelent to champion qv77 there is no gap

OBJ yes new to me about three weeks

Thank you all for help trying to find manual to rebuild carbs. Will they have jet sizes for altitude or rely on marine shop?

I would strongly suggest putting the champions back in that motor. The ignitions were designed around them and their specific heat ranges.

I guess I wasn't clear. I know what red lever we are talking about. What position is it in to run and what position. Where did you turn it to to make the motor start and run??

mike the primer basicly injects fuel into the engine, rather that butterflys in the carb. when you turn the red handle you are basicly adding more fuel to the fire. Johnson/evinrude traditionally run better or Champion plugs. i think i would order carb kits , and fuel pump kit, and replace all the rubber hoses. they're 22 y/o. it's preventative and my eleviate problems in the near futrue. the kits, should arrive about the time of the manual. i have a saying about manuals.'.pretend like you going to be tested on it, the high score gets a new engine.'

Yes there is a red lever on the primer solenoid. I think on your engine the primer solenoid is mounted on the starboard side of the engine just in back of the lower carb. It'll be a black cylinder. The red lever sticks out from the head. Normal running is with the lever pointed to the back of the solenoid. When you turn it (bout 180* counter clockwise) it will let fuel pump into the reeds anytime the the engine is running or if you squeeze the primer bulb. The lever should be used only if the solenoid fails to pick up when the key switch is pushed in.

Get rid of the bosch plugs and get Champion UL77V's. They are surface gaps also.

Just how high above sea level were you?

Goofed up reply above

Solenoid is on starboard side lever was pointed towards rear when rotated about 90* or to 12 oclock motor took off and would run at top speed. I run boat at between 5500 and 10000 above sea level problem worst at higher altitude. Will get champion plugs the bosch were put in by old onwer.

Getting great info thanks for all inputs and not making me feel like real dumba** great board and lots of friendly people

Your motor is starving for fuel. That's exactly opposite of high altitude symptoms. Your motor should be starving for air. Time to tear the carbs down and do a thorough cleaning and rebuild.
