I have a 2000 Johnson 50hp outboard. I was out on the lake yesterday and was cruising along. I put the motor into neutral for about 30 seconds and again shifted into forward gear. At this time as i tried to accelerate the motor will not go and it sorta shakes, so my top speed was now about 6 mph.

I would assume this switched to slow mode. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with causes ot solutions for this?

Thanks in advance...

Re: s.l.o.w

S.L.O.W. is usually triggered by overheating. When that happens, the engine has already exceeded 200 degrees and is at risk. Time to replace the water pump impeller and check the thermostats.

Thanks for the response. Could the impeller be damaged or need to be changed even though there is still a strong water discharge?

The problem with a tell-tale is that it tells you that the water pump is working, and nothing else. The water may not be going through the engine's cooling circuit at all.

Thanks for all the info!
It's rocket science learning how these engines work!

Yeah, they are a different critter compared to what a seasoned shade tree runs into. It's rewarding though. KR
