Sacrilege to the Tinny Nation

I was reading a thread on a renovation and came across some blatant anti tinny posts.

I understand that Starmada and other notable tinny brands are in the minority on these pages, but I was shocked by the clear biased comments against Aluminum boats.

I have often seen an attempt to not denigrate itchy FG boats on these pages, but it doesn't seem to be a two way street.

One of the following posters was allowed to vote on the Official Splash of the Year.

you must understand.....this ....right now....is a tinny...it has no reevits but it is metal....so it wants to cut you.....talk nice to it,,,,,and when its not looking, cover it with glass,,,,(make sure you cover the docking lights ("or its eyes") with a blindfold....when you do that....or it will panic and throw a tantrum.

if it does throw a tantrum and trys to mane you bleed......show it a cutting torch.....then glass it up !

I figure if she gives me any trouble I will pull out the sawzal and start cutting off non-esentail parts! I think she will cooperate, its all tin boat's secret dream to be a glass boat.....

By the way what are these weird round things????
Follow by a pic of a rivet in a deck.

They're called reevets. It's what the starmada uses to slowly take over the great lakes area

I'm not advocating a range war here, but them is fightin' words.

I am glad to say the only itch I want is from gutting and cutting a FG. Thank goodness for Tinny's everywhere and to the Starmada.

Taking over the Great Lakes seems like a good idea, and I concur about the cutting'n'gutting glassers.. they make great donor boats! :) serously though, how many good fiberglass boats do you see 40-50 years old? I've scrapped over 20 of them, all 70's vintage, and the best was still so rotten as to be completly useless!

One of the most HEATED threads I was ever posting in..
It was fun & games for awhile, but some lines were crossed I well, was seeing hor many hours of driving would it take for "retribution".

Every once in a while we do trade padded shots across each others bows, just warning shots....

for now

I have rebuilt both glass and tin.

Love them both.

Most all 30year old boats have the same problem WOOD just the tinnys are so much easier to do.

I just combined the materials. The boat is aluminum, the fishing rods are fiberglass. See, that was not hard to get along now was it?

I own Starcrafts in both materials. Starcraft is an EQUAL opportunity boat builder...

Boys will be boys eh. I think it's time for a bonfire and a couple of beers, we can settle this like men. Taking over the Great Lakes, that's funny, so true but still funny.

I used to drive by the the Sea Ray plant in Oxford Michigan on my way to work in a foundry. What a horrible smell, no not the foundry well yea the foundry too. That fiberglass stunk big time, you could smell it a half mile away as you were driving by on M24. I was sorry to see it close.

Boats I'd like to own;
Mariner 14' or 20' (outboard)
Kingfisher 16' with a Homelite/Bearcat 55 hp 4 cycle
Islander 19' with a 4.3 I/O
Starcheif 18-1/2' with a 100 horse tower of power Merc
PowerCat 14', maybe 18' with twin outboards, 1958-1964
18' Wellcraft Airslot I/O or outboard
G3 1959-1967
Donzi Sweet Sixteen, 1960's
Starcraft Stinger with the biggest outboard it will hold!
Glasstron GT-150 (James Bond used it to jump with)

Some are Aluminum some are Glass, all are either functional fishing boats or speed boats. No way I'll own all these, but maybe one or two, who knows. A guy can dream. Now pass the Gluvit and the Rivits, I got two tin boats to finish here.

Re: Sacrilege to the Tinny Nation

Many of the critics posting that hate tinnies are kids and use the pick up the chicks argument.

I fish, but I also captain the family water skiers. I have owned two glassers before, and they served
that purpose well, but not the greatest fishing platform as far as casting and trolling. Growing up
fishing many an Ontario lake, I am a shoalbanger, and still rented the 14' tin can even though the ski boat
was at the dock.

Nowadays, you see all the glass combo boats that originated from traditional bass boats, like the Ranger Riata,
and the other clones by other manufacturers. Many Lake Erie walleye guys are now pitching the Starcraft's and Lund's
in favor these for a better ride.

If money was not an issue, this would be my setup:

A Ranger Riata 21' for Lake Erie walleye trolling and water skiing
A Lund 2075 Pro V for all other fishing inland and Lake Erie
A Grady White 23' Gulfstream docked at Erie for fun, and large perch outings

I would keep my old Starcraft tinnie for occasional usage.

Have to win the lottery for that....................lol

Re: Sacrilege to the Tinny Nation

I have two FG boats that need repair / rebuild. Based on the information I researched in the renovation thread, I was able to buy a splash ready boat for less than it would cost to rebuild either of the two boats.

In addition when it comes time to work on my boat, the ease and expense will be less than what it would be with a FG.

With an unlimited budget, yes I see having a few boats, and I'm sure there would be a FG in the mix. But with an unlimited budget the boats would become disposable, use them until they are dead and toss them or donate to the next poor soul.

Maybe it is a good thing that so many people like FG boats, it leaves more tinny's for the Starmada.

That being said I don't have an unlimited budget and having owned both FG and Tinny's I'll invest my money in boats that even if totaled will still have some value at the scrapyard.

I love the smell of rotten stringers in a glass boat in the morning!! Oh and a strong cup of coffee to go with that please and perhaps a 3M half mask.

Re: Sacrilege to the Tinny Nation

I've got a friend whose parents have a 39' Sea Ray. We spend some time on it here and there but it's a hassle to get out of the marina...not to mention how much fuel two 502s drink at WOT just to get moving. The day I took him out on my Starcraft SS he couldn't WAIT to tube and ski and was astonished that I was on plane at 10MPH. These little AL boats have their perks!

The only negative side I've seen of my tinny is the ride. When the lake gets choppy it rides worse than my old buddys tri hull glasser. Other than that I couldn't love her more!
