:(Just picked the baby up from the dealership, for it's winterization, and put it to bed for the winter. Just had to vent and see if anybody else is doing the same thing. Hard for me to not boat till next spring.

I got home from work the other morning an it was 33 degrees out. I about cried while winterizing the boat. Makes me want to move to the south.

Oh...I thought winterizing was getting out my sneekers, jeans, and a sweater. I digress!

Re: Sad day

Back in my 20's when I was able to spend a lot time fishing with no kids or responsibility for anything much. I was fishing on Lake Lanier on Christmas Day catching white bass and stripers a few snow flurry's blowing around. Those were the good ole' days we didn't fish or boat much at all during the heat of the summer too much. Boat and ski traffic whipping around made it too rough for our little 15 foot ebbtide bass boat to try and fish. We'd start fishing when the water got too cold for all but the die-hard skiers and fish all winter until the skiers returned then quit till it cooled back down.Guess we summerized our boat LOL even though Georgia is pretty far south it still can get really cold on the water in the winter so long handle underwear, good thick socks or two pair, insulated boots, insulated coveralls, full face ski-robbers mask, gloves with the fingers cut out and a thermos full of hot coffee was what we used to stay warm.Once you started catching fish you'd forget the cold anyway.

Re: Sad day

I figured your sadness came from the bill the dealer gave you for winterizing.

Our boats are kept in boathouses, so we just change 4 plugs on our outboards, and change the lower unit grease every other year. We don't fog our carbs, as there's a fair chance we'll use the boats on a nice, still sunny November or December day.

The Fall is a glorious time to boat--when the leaves turn. In the Mid South, everything's still green. We expect the leaves to be in full color the last week of October and the first week of November.

The worst time of the year is January-March. When you're a boater, cabin fever is real. If you're a fisherman, the cold weather is the best time to fish--starting now.

When do people winterize in Phoenix Arizona?

Confused because It only dropped slightly below freezing a few days last year.

Re: Sad day

Many years ago I traveled for my job and still smoked. I stood at the front entrance to Lakeview Hospital two weeks into Dec and without gloves could not hold a smoke between my frozen fingers. It was so cold I promised myself I would never complain about the heat in Florida again. Today was sunny 79 the high and tonight it will be 59.
I will take the heat anyday.

Re: Sad day

Just got done winterizing mine yesterday, We went out about a week ago - Wanted to go out again for one last ride but the waves have been 6'-16' for the last 4 days with no sign of letting up. I have a date set up for the end of the month for storage for the winter, Hopefully get a few items fixed up durring the winter so I can start early next year.

Let's hope for an early spring.

Haven't ridden a sled in YEARS, but those are one of the things I do miss down here in the south. Winterizing is a whole lot easier though - if you decide you're not going to run it all year.

Re: Sad day

Even though we have a month or so of good boating weather here in the carolinas I was afraid I would be dry docked for the winter after the foot on my mercury developed some serious issues, After thinking about it I went ahead and had the thing fixed for a hundred bucks now. Fall around here is just too beautiful to miss out on a few more boat rides,, Picture was taken last fallmerc fall.jpg

Here in Key Largo, winterization means getting ready for all the snow birds coming my way! :D

I start my "on the water" season on Jan 1st and end it Dec 31st. If I made it any longer, I would cut into next year's season. Teaching Scuba is a year round endeavor, so I am always on boats.

I will probably winterize mine this weekend, by removing the bimini. Gets in the way striper fishing!

Now would be a good time to go boat shoping for a 12-14ft tinnie with a small outboard. You could still get out on the water later in the season when you feel the itch, and have no hassle when you get home other than covering it up.

Just my 2?... ;)

Re: Sad day

Got to get mine in to winterize soon. We are fair weather like you. 70 degrees plus or no go and only when the water is swimable which it hasn't been for a while. x2 on the snowmobiles too. Have two on my Floe Trailer in the Garage. Am 30 seconds from a trail head of 20,000 miles of groomed trails (30 second to the lake the other direction as well for boating). Of course however the one that is carbed won't stay running when I tried it this summer. Man do I hate carbs. Of course that one is a Touring model that is my wife's and so I am already hearing about it as the weather turns.
