Sad today...

So I just got called by the Johnson/Evinrude dealer where I have my boat for a motor tune up on a boat I just bought a couple of months ago. They did a compression test and one of the cylinders was only 35psi. Upon inspection the rings had broken and trashed up the inside of the cylinder. Apparently they've already been rebored. The mechanic also said it's a bit of a mix-together setup because the motor mount nameplate says 90hp but he said it's at least a 115, likely 140hp powerhead. The guy who sold it to me said it was a 140, but didn't seem too knowledgeable so I brushed it off. I was also a complete newbie so didn't take the proper pre-boat buying precautions either so bad to me. I accept that. What floored me was the quote to repair. Way beyond what the motor's worth. It's an early 80's from what I can tell, but who knows now? Boat's in ok condition, I was going to redo the transom if the motor checked out but now don't think I could give it away...
ugh...just ranting...
and yeah, I know what I should have looked for now, after 2 solid months of reading Iboats, just didn't expect this news, I even had it out a couple of times and it appeared to run awesome, just a little trouble idling...
anyways...back to work...ugh...

Sorry to hear about your experience. Just curious, what did the shop recommend fixing?

Man some days are like that. Buy a motor and find out it has been tricked many times. I feel for ya, but think about these new motors!!! Mount one on and get to looking for the fish. :)

Re: Sad today...

The shop recommended looking for a new motor. He said even IF it could be bored, it would likely have to be 0.040 and the sleeve would be too thin and would eventually wear out quickly so he said they could do it, but if it was him, he wouldn't. Which is how I feel. Yeah, I've been looking at newer motors, I wouldn't waste my time on an older one again. At least get a newer 2nd hand one rebuilt or reconditioned from a dealer. Just want to get the family on the water and find some fish...man I hate expensive projects...

Re: Sad today...

Given that I've kinda lost confidence in this motor, I don't think I'd go that route. If I can't find someone who wants a project boat and I end up keeping her, I'll put a good one on.
